Ran Gvili’s remains and the myth of victory: How Netanyahu rebrands failure as triumph

TEHRAN — The retrieval of the remains of Ran Gvili, the last Israeli captive in the Gaza Strip, has been framed by Prime Minister Benjamin as an "extraordinary achievement," but this rhetoric serves only to mask a deeper reality of military and political failure.

For weeks, the Israeli military utilized the search for Gvili as a thin pretext to stall the reopening of the Rafah border crossing, prolonging the collective punishment of Gazans and maintaining a suffocating blockade even under the supposed terms of a ceasefire.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem rightly noted that the discovery of Gvili’s remains confirms the movement’s adherence to the October ceasefire agreement—a stark contrast to Israel’s repeated violations of the truce deal.

While Netanyahu claims to have "brought everyone back," his words ignore the fact that Israel has failed to defeat Hamas militarily after more than two years of relentless warfare. The resistance remains a cohesive force, capable of negotiating on its own terms and surviving an onslaught that has killed more than 71,000 Palestinians since October 2023. Shockingly, even after the October 2025 ceasefire was meant to bring a reprieve, the Israeli military has continued its operations, killing hundreds of civilians. This persistent violence proves that the occupation is more interested in continued aggression than actual peace.

The retrieval of Gvili’s remains now clears the way for the second phase of President Donald Trump’s "Board of Peace" plan. However, this initiative appears less like a roadmap for stability and more like a blueprint for the total disarmament and subjugation of the Palestinian people. Netanyahu has signaled his true intentions, pivoting immediately from the return of Gvili to demands for the demilitarization of the Strip rather than its reconstruction. By prioritizing the disarmament of Hamas and other Palestinian groups before addressing the humanitarian catastrophe, the plan seeks to strip Palestinians of their right to self-defense while leaving them in a permanent state of ruins.

Ultimately, the "Board of Peace" acts as a vehicle for Israeli security demands, ignoring the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people to sovereignty. Israel’s refusal to move toward reconstruction without first achieving total submission ensures that true stability remains out of reach, as peace cannot be built upon the rubble of a population that refuses to be erased.
