A colonial reckoning: How Israel's war on Iran reopens old wounds

Soumaya Ghannoushi

Soumaya Ghannoushi, writer and expert in Middle East politics, says Israel is no longer hiding its crimes. It wages open genocide in Gaza and strikes across Lebanon, Syria and now Iran, acting without regard for borders or law.
She says that Israel's war on Iran is unprovoked and driven by hypocrisy, targeting a peaceful nuclear programme while holding its own undeclared nuclear arsenal. Western powers, including Britain, the US and France, have rushed to support Israel, repeating the same justifications used for the assault on Gaza. Ghannoushi says Israel was never just a state, but a Western outpost built to dominate the region. Now, its leadership flaunts violence, with settlers and soldiers openly calling for genocide. But this time, the region is shifting. Iran has endured decades of sanctions, sabotage and assassination, and is now striking back. For the first time since 1948, Israeli cities are under fire. The myth of invincibility is broken. Ghannoushi concludes that this is not just a war. It is a war on dignity, and the fire Israel has lit may now be beyond its control.
