India and the UAE have reached a major defense pact that includes a deepening of military ties, a natural gas deal, and a nuclear cooperation agreement involving the “deployment of large nuclear reactors.”

The Emirati Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on 19 January that talks between UAE President Mohammad bin Zayed (MbZ) and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi “acknowledged steady and strong bilateral defense and security cooperation as a core pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

“The leaders also welcomed the enactment of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) law," which enhances civil nuclear cooperation.

Abu Dhabi and New Delhi agreed to explore a partnership in advanced nuclear technologies, including “development and deployment of large nuclear reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as well as cooperation in advanced reactor systems, nuclear power plant operations and maintenance, and nuclear safety.”

The two nations also agreed to double bilateral trade to $200 billion within six years and signed agreements on defense cooperation, space, food exports, investment, and advanced computing.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told reporters that MbZ and Modi discussed Yemen, where UAE-Saudi rivalry led to clashes and Saudi air raids on Emirati-backed militias.

Abu Dhabi withdrew from the Saudi-led coalition and declared an end to its Yemen mission.

The deal between the UAE and India comes just days after Turkiye announced their intention to join a recent defense pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

The trilateral defense deal builds on the September defense pact, which treats an attack on one as an attack on both.

According to Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia is also reportedly working to establish a “new military coalition” with Somalia and Egypt – aimed at countering UAE influence.

The coalition “aims to foster more strategic collaboration on Red Sea security as well as deeper military cooperation,” sources told the outlet.
