
It was held on the theme “The Legacy of Sheikh Tusi in Islamic and Western Thought; Contemporary Approaches”, with the support of the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine and with the participation of researchers and experts from inside and outside Iraq.
The Sheikh Tusi Studies and Research Center affiliated with the Astan’s Supreme Committee for the Restoration of Heritage, Al-Kafeel University, and the Shia Research Institute of Toronto, Canada, participated in organizing this conference.
“Najaf Seminary: A Thousand Years of Giving” was the slogan of the conference, held with the aim of commemorating the thousandth anniversary of the establishment of the seminary and highlighting the all-round personality of Sheikh Tusi, who laid the foundations of the sciences of jurisprudence, principles, and interpretation.
Sheikh Muhammad Hussein Bahsoun Ameli, a member of the preparatory committee of the conference, said the Najaf Seminary is of great importance as one of the oldest, most rooted, and most continuous scientific centers in the Islamic world, and on the occasion of the millennium of the migration of Sheikh Tusi from Baghdad to Najaf, and to revive this monument, it was decided to hold an international conference.
He added that the Sheikh Tusi Center has undertaken the revival of this monument through a comprehensive scientific project that seeks to revive the legacy of Sheikh Tusi and study what has been written about his works.
At the end of the conference activities on Thursday, the preparatory committee issued a set of recommendations as follows:
1- Increasing scientific efforts and integrating capabilities and gathering research forces from various scientific institutions and centers in order to serve the legacy of the Najaf Seminary and its great scholars and figures.
2- Introducing the Najaf Seminary and its figures throughout a thousand years of continuous scientific giving.
3- Highlighting the role of the Najaf Seminary as a deep-rooted scientific capital that, despite its small geographical area, has housed thousands of scholars and great people who have had a profound impact on the formation of Islamic civilization in various fields of science, practice, jihad, politics and society, similar to the largest Islamic scientific centers such as Al-Azhar University in Egypt, Al-Zaytouna University in Tunisia and Al-Qarawiyyin University in Morocco.
4- Encouraging comparative studies that highlight the influence of Sheikh Tusi and the Najaf Seminary on other Islamic jurisprudential and theological schools and explain the spread of this influence in the East and the West.
5- Efforts to create a comprehensive digital scientific database that deals with the legacy of Sheikh Tusi and the Najaf Seminary, including manuscripts, printed works, studies and academic theses, in order to facilitate access to them by researchers at the global level.
6- Supporting young researchers and postgraduate students and encouraging them to choose research topics related to the legacy of Sheikh Tusi and the Najaf Seminary.
7- Emphasizing the importance of translating authoritative studies related to Sheikh Tusi and the Najaf Seminary into modern languages, especially English and French, to strengthen the global scientific presence of this heritage.
8- Continuing to hold periodic scientific conferences and seminars as a platform for authoritative scientific dialogue, exchange of experiences among researchers, and accumulation of knowledge about the history of the Najaf Seminary and its figures.
