Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the start of Operation True Promise 4, targeting Israel and US bases in the Persian Gulf region on 28 February, following a wave of unprovoked strikes across the Islamic Republic.

The IRGC said it struck Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the Ali al-Salem Base in Kuwait, the Al-Dhafra Air Base in the UAE, and the US 5th Fleet Base in Bahrain.

The IRGC launched True Promise 4 against "the criminal US army and the child-killing Zionist regime," the statement added.

Iran launched previous operations against Israel, True Promise 1, 2, and 3, in response to previous unprovoked Israeli attacks since the start of the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza in October 2023.

The IRGC vowed to continue the missile and drone attacks in response to the joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran that began Saturday morning.

Shortly after 09:30 Tehran time (06:00 GMT), Iranian media reported explosions in the capital.

Explosions were also reportedly heard in multiple other cities across the country, including in Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah.

An Israeli strike on a primary school killed at least 57 school girls and injured 60 others in the city of Minab in southern Iran's Hormozgan province, Iran's Tasnim News Agency reported.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump issued separate video statements announcing the strikes.

Trump described the operation as "massive and ongoing" and said his goal was regime change in Tehran.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk has called for "restraint and implore all parties to see reason, to de-escalate, and for a return to the 'negotiating table.'"

Turk condemned the unprovoked US-Israel attack, as well as Iran's response in self-defense.

"I deplore the military strikes across Iran this morning by Israel and the United States of America, and the subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran," Turk stated.

The US-Israeli attack comes one day after reports that Tehran and Washington had made significant progress toward reaching a deal over Iran's nuclear program.
