New, classic Oscar-winning films at IAF cinematheque

TEHRAN-The cinematheque of the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) in Tehran will screen two foreign films, a new and a classic one, at the weekend for the enthusiasts.

On Thursday, the 2021 British coming-of-age drama “Belfast” written and directed by Kenneth Branagh will be shown with Persian subtitle at Nasseri Hall at 5 p.m., Honaronline reported.

The 98-minute movie is the 5th film in the “Cinema of the Day” program of the cinematheque, which is dedicated to the screening of the recent famous foreign films.

The film, follows a young boy's childhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the beginning of The Troubles in 1969. It stars Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan and Jude Hill among others.

Upon its global release, “Belfast” received generally positive reviews from critics for Branagh's direction and screenplay, cinematography, and the performances of the cast.

Participating in several festivals and award ceremonies, it won the People's Choice Award at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, the Best Original Screenplay at the 94th Academy Awards and the 79th Golden Globe Awards, as well as the Outstanding British Film at the 75th British Academy Film Awards.

On Friday, the same hall will have Elia Kazan’s “Viva Zapata!” on its silver screen for the lovers of classic films.

The 1952 American western film, which has been dubbed into Persian, will start at 5 p.m. and run for 113 minutes.

It is a fictionalized account of the life of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, who led a rebellion against the corrupt, oppressive dictatorship of President Porfirio Díaz in the early 20th century. The movie depicts his life from his peasant upbringing through his rise to power in the early 1900s and his death in 1919. The cast includes Marlon Brando, Jean Peters and Anthony Quinn among others.

Anthony Quinn won the Oscar for the Best Supporting Actor at the 25th Academy Awards. Marlon Brando, too, won Best Actor at British Academy Film Awards and Cannes Film Festival the same year.

The Iranian Artists Forum is situated at Artists Park on North Mousavi Street, Taleqani Street.
