Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said he approved the memorandum of understanding with the United States despite personal reservations, stressing that future negotiations would not mean surrendering to American demands.

Key Developments

  • Khamenei said he held a “different opinion” regarding the memorandum but allowed it to proceed.
  • He said President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged to protect the rights of Iran and the Resistance Front.
  • Khamenei stressed that direct negotiations with the US do not mean yielding to the enemy.

‘I Had a Different Opinion’

In a message to the Iranian people following the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said Iranian officials had worked diligently throughout the negotiation process.

Khamenei contrasted those efforts with what he described as US pressure tactics, saying that American President Donald Trump had resorted to various forms of pressure because he was unable to achieve his objectives.

“The relevant officials made diligent efforts motivated by concern and good faith, while the American president resorted to all kinds of pressure tactics, stemming from his inability to accomplish this matter,” Khamenei said.

Khamenei revealed that he personally held reservations about the memorandum but ultimately authorized the process to move forward.

He said his decision was based on assurances provided by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, acting in his capacity as chairman of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

According to Khamenei, Pezeshkian and other members of the council pledged to protect the rights of the Iranian people and the Resistance Front throughout the implementation of the agreement.

Khamenei added that the Iranian president had accepted responsibility for the process and had pledged not to accept additional American demands.

“He will not yield to the American side if it wants to impose expansionist dictates or demand more,” Khamenei said.

‘Negotiations Do Not Mean Surrender’

Addressing future talks with Washington, Khamenei stressed that direct negotiations should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness or submission.

“Direct negotiations do not mean surrendering to the enemy,” he said.

Khamenei added that any future engagement with the United States would not mean accepting Washington’s positions or abandoning Iran’s principles.

“Direct negotiations that will be held in the future will in no way mean yielding to the enemy’s opinion,” he said.

Khamenei said the Iranian people would now wait to see whether the commitments and guarantees discussed during the negotiations are fully implemented.

The 14-point agreement provides for an immediate halt to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and establishes a 60-day period of negotiations aimed at reaching a final comprehensive agreement.
