The recent visit to Tehran of Syria’s new foreign minister and his talks with senior Iranian officials on bilateral cooperation was yet another indication of the vital role the Islamic Republic plays in safeguarding peace and stability in the region against the destabilizing efforts of the US, the illegal Zionist entity, and the super-rich but rootless regimes of the spurious states of the Persian Gulf.
Faisal al-Meqdad, who last month became Syria’s top diplomat following the death of his longtime predecessor, Walid al-Mu’allam, is a seasoned diplomat, having served his country in important posts including that of deputy foreign minister.
He held crucial talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Chief of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami, and Dr. Ali Akbar Velayati the former 4-term foreign minister who serves as International Affairs Advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
These talks unnerved the enemies of the two countries in view of the fact that this was the new Syrian foreign minister’s first trip abroad and the importance of cooperation in various fields between Tehran and Damascus, including defence matters and the reconstruction of the war-ravaged country.
Dr. Velayati pointed out: "Undoubtedly, Syria plays a fundamental and decisive role in the Resistance Front, and has paid a heavy price in this regard by treading the path of dignity and independence with power and full awareness of the plans of the enemies.”
Faisal al-Meqdad who presented President Bashar al-Assad’s message and briefed his hosts on the latest situation in his country, was assured of the full support of the Islamic Republic in the fight against terrorism, as well as the state terrorism of Israel and the US.
It should be noted that while the Zionists continue to occupy parts of Syria’s Golan Heights despite UN resolutions calling for their exit, the US, which has mischievously declared support for Israel’s illegal annexation of the Golan, is also in occupation of parts of Syria’s soil near that country’s borders with Iraq and Jordan, as well as in the eastern Euphrates region, where it has seized the oilfields and is stealing Syrian oil in violation of the Charter of the World Body.
Time and again the government in Damascus has called for withdrawal of the American occupiers, but the US refuses to respect Syria’s sovereignty and is hand-in-glove with the Zionist entity in carrying out frequent air raids on industrial and defence targets in support of the remnants of the terrorists still in occupation of parts of Syrian soil, especially in the northern Idlib northern province, following failure to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad in the now almost decade-long conflict.
The Syrian people and the army, which are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim, have defeated the seditious US-Arab-Israeli bid to create either sectarian tensions or ethnic clashes (with the Kurdish minority), in spite of the estimated five hundred thousand Syrian people killed by the takfiri and other terrorists, in addition to the displaced five million whose return home the US is preventing in a bid to portray instability in Syria.
It is obvious the US and its clients have lost the war and are on the verge of a disgraceful retreat, thanks to the invaluable assistance provided to the Syrian government by the Islamic Republic of Iran, Russia, and popular forces that make up the Resistance Front of the region.
Tehran has pledged to assist in liberating the Golan Heights as well as the American occupied parts in addition to help Damascus rebuild its economy, since a strong and independent Syria is vital for the stability of the entire region and the fast approaching goal of the end of the Zionist entity, no matter the billions of dollars of the looted oil wealth of the Persian Gulf the treasonous Arab regimes have started to pour into Israel to further suppress the Palestinian people.
The Islamic Republic remembers how steadfastly the Late President Hafez al-Assad had stood beside Iran during the 8-year war the US had imposed in the 1980s through Saddam of Baghdad, and how he had closed the Iraqi oil pipeline to the Mediterranean Sea via Syrian territory.
