Global Muslim Scholars Urge Al-Azhar Grand Imam for Gaza Fatwa

According to Taghrib News Agency, Dr. Ali Muhammad Al-Sallabi, Secretary-General, and Professor Dr. Ali Muhiuddin Al-Qaradaghi, President of the IUMS, expressed their appreciation for Al-Azhar's clear and courageous stances in defending the Palestinian people. They urged him to issue a clear fatwa declaring the delivery of aid to Gaza and the lifting of the siege as a religious imperative.

The letter highlighted Egypt's and Al-Azhar's historical role in combating colonialism and defending the oppressed, from resistance against the Mongol invasion to confronting French and British occupations. It praised Al-Azhar's past statements and fatwas, describing them as "immortal" and elevating Al-Azhar's standing in the conscience of the Islamic nation.
The scholars warned against the divine and historical consequences of failing to support the oppressed, stating, "God will rebuke the powerful who abandon the weak with calamities that befall the oppressed themselves. This is one of God's unchangeable traditions."
The letter also recalled Al-Azhar's own prominent past statements, including: "History will not forgive those who failed to support Palestine," "Every occupation, sooner or later, will end," and "Settlers in occupied territories are usurpers, not civilians."
Concluding, the Muslim scholars emphasized the heavy religious, moral, and humanitarian responsibility of Egypt and Al-Azhar towards Gaza. They urged Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb to fulfill his leading and pioneering role at this critical juncture by issuing a fatwa that calls upon Egyptian leadership to take practical steps for lifting the siege, sending humanitarian aid, and halting the genocide in Gaza.
