‘Enemy opposes faith, unity, knowledge’: Snippets from Leader’s speech at martyrs' memorial ceremony

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei delivered a speech in Tehran on Tuesday during a ceremony marking the 40th day since the martyrdom of Iranian commanders, nuclear scientists and ordinary citizens in the Israeli war of aggression.

The ceremony was attended by the families of the martyrs as well as senior government and military officials.

In his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei said the 12-day unprovoked war against the Islamic Republic demonstrated the strength, resolve and determination of the Iranian nation.

He stressed that the root of hostility toward Iran lies in the nation’s “faith, knowledge and unity.”

The following are snippets from the speech:

  • This meeting was held to honor the dear families of the martyrs and to offer condolences to all those grieving the recent incidents that occurred in the imposed war.

  • I felt it necessary to offer my condolences to all the survivors of the dear ones, military commanders, dear scientists, and our dear people, who were martyred in this war.

  • What happened to the Islamic Republic in these 12 days, in addition to the great honors that the Iranian nation achieved—which even people around the world are now acknowledging—[was that] the Islamic Republic and the dear Iranian nation demonstrated their power, determination, and willpower to the world.

  • If others had (until now) only heard something from afar, (this time) they experienced the power of the Islamic Republic up close.

  • It is important to note that the Islamic Republic showed the world the unparalleled strength of the foundations of its system and its country.

  • These incidents are not unprecedented for the Islamic Republic. Since the beginning of the [Islamic] Revolution, such events have repeatedly occurred in the country.

  • In addition to the eight-year imposed war, there have been seditions, drawing weak-minded individuals against the nation, various military, political, and security seditions, coups, and the like. [Yet] the Islamic Republic overcame all of these.

  • Over these more than 45 years, the Islamic Republic has managed to thwart all enemy conspiracies—despite the hardships—and has been victorious over all its enemies in these areas.

  • What is important is that we must recognize that Islamic Iran is founded upon [the pillars of] 'religion' and 'knowledge.'

  • In the foundation of the Islamic Republic, the two key elements are 'religion' and 'knowledge'—and that is why people's faith and knowledge of our youth have forced the enemy to retreat in many different arenas. And this will continue to be the case.

  • What global arrogance, led by criminal America, opposes is precisely your religion and your knowledge.

  • They oppose your religion, this widespread faith of the people, this unity under the shadow of Islam and the Qur'an—and they oppose your knowledge.

  • The fact that, since the victory of the [Islamic] Revolution until today, Iran’s population has doubled while the number of university students has increased perhaps tenfold or more—this upsets them.

  • That the Islamic Republic is able to bring forth new discourse in various fields of science and knowledge—whether in the humanities, technical sciences, or religious sciences—this disturbs them; this is what they oppose.

  • What they say about the nuclear issue, enrichment, human rights, and such things—these are mere pretexts; the real issue is this.

  • By divine grace, the Iranian nation will not abandon its religion and its knowledge.

  • We will take great steps to strengthen our religious faith and to expand and deepen our diverse and varied knowledge.

  • By God’s grace and to the frustration of the enemy, we will be able to raise Iran to the peak of progress and pride.

  • The Iranian nation has this capability, and God willing, with divine success, this capability will be exercised and will reach its goal.
