The US Escalation Plan in Yemen: Saudi Arabia’s Role in the Broader Context

After months of relative calm, tensions between Sanaa and Riyadh have resurfaced, driven by accusations from Yemeni officials claiming Saudi Arabia is collaborating with the United States to disrupt the peace process in Yemen and escalate military actions. These developments aim to weaken the Yemeni front that supports Gaza amidst ongoing regional conflicts.

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in Saudi involvement, with the Kingdom reportedly allowing Yemeni military factions aligned with it to attend Washington meetings aimed at implementing a US-backed military strategy. Sources in Sanaa disclosed that these meetings involved military leaders from the Western coalition alongside Saudi-aligned Yemeni factions, suggesting that Saudi engagement in this American initiative is evident and will likely lead Sanaa to respond aggressively to any escalation from Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.
Over the past few days, a series of strategic meetings took place in Riyadh, including discussions between Saudi military leaders and the "Najran Axis" factions, as well as notable interactions with Tariq Saleh, a key figure in the UAE-backed forces on Yemen's West Coast. The meetings involved high-level coordination to bolster support for the Aden government, with the British and French ambassadors also participating, reflecting international interests in the ongoing conflict.
In light of these military maneuvers, UN envoy Hans Grundberg is making efforts to prevent an escalation that could derail ongoing peace initiatives. Political sources have revealed that Muscat is facilitating new negotiations among Yemeni parties, aiming to address economic challenges, particularly related to Yemeni crude oil exports and employee salaries. Reports indicate that Sanaa is open to allowing oil exports in exchange for a fair distribution of revenues to employees, potentially paving the way for discussions on currency unification and banking operations in Yemen.
However, the US continues to assert that progress in the peace process is contingent on halting military operations conducted by Sanaa forces, particularly in the Red Sea region. Recently, the British Maritime Trade Operations reported an incident involving explosions near a ship south of Mokha, further complicating the security situation in the area.
