Mojtaba Khamenei said on 12 March in his first speech as the new Supreme Leader of Iran that “other fronts” may be opened if it is deemed necessary throughout the ongoing war, while vowing “vengeance” against Tehran’s enemies and thanking the Islamic Republic’s allies.

The new supreme leader vowed “victory over the enemy in the ongoing war.”

Khamenei said it was “necessary to continue using the option of closing the Strait of Hormuz,” while adding that “Studies have been conducted on opening other fronts where the enemy lacks experience and would be extremely weak, and this will be activated if the war continues and as required by strategic interest.”

“I assure everyone that we will not neglect avenging the blood of your martyrs. This vengeance is not limited to the martyrdom of the leader of the revolution; every individual of our people who is martyred by the enemy represents an independent case in the file of retribution. A limited part of this retribution has been achieved so far, but it will remain open until fully realized, especially concerning the blood of our children,” he went on to say, referring specifically to the US-Israeli attack on the girls’ school in Minab.

“I affirm that we will demand compensation from the enemy. If they refuse, we will seize their assets as we see fit; if that is not possible, we will destroy property of equal value.”

The leader also expressed gratitude and “sincere thanks to the mujahideen of the resistance front.”

“We consider the countries of the resistance front our best friends … There is no doubt that cooperation among the components of this front shortens the path to liberation … We have seen how courageous and faithful Yemen did not abandon defending the oppressed people of Gaza, how Hezbollah supported the Islamic Republic despite all obstacles, and how the Iraqi resistance bravely followed this path,” he added.

He also vowed that Tehran will continue to attack US bases in the region that are used to attack his country. “We will be forced to continue this if the use of those bases continues, while reaffirming our constant desire for friendly relations with our neighbors.”

Khamenei was appointed as Supreme Leader of Iran on 8 March after being chosen out of several options by the Council of Experts. The appointment was announced the following day.

The Israeli attacks, which on 28 February assassinated his father, Ali Khamenei – Iran’s supreme leader for almost four decades – also killed Mojtaba’s mother, sister, wife, and son. Mojtaba himself was reportedly injured in the strikes.

He is the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

President Masoud Pezeshkian described the appointment as the beginning of “a new era of dignity and strength.”
