TEHRAN - During a meeting on Wednesday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his condolences to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei for the tragic passing of President Ebrahim Raisi.
The two leaders discussed the historical ties and shared interests between their nations, with Ayatollah Khamenei affirming that Iran's policy of strengthening relations with Armenia will persist under the guidance of caretaker President Mohammad Mokhber. He also emphasized the strategic importance of the Iran-Armenia relationship and cautioned against potential opposition to the two countries’ cooperation
“My emphasis on expanding cooperation is based on the strategic nature of relations, but what is important is that the relations between Iran and Armenia have opponents, which is why matters related to the two countries must be handled with caution and care,” the leader said.
Ayatollah Khamenei also stressed the need for careful handling of bilateral matters, particularly in light of border issues.
“Our late president was very sensitive to the border issues related to Armenia and the events surrounding them. This sensitivity and caution should continue to be observed, and we must be able to secure our own interests.”
Pashinyan, for his part, conveyed his shock over the loss of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, expressing confidence in Iran's continued stability under Ayatollah Khamenei's leadership.
“We were shocked and astounded to hear the news of the passing of the Iranian President and the Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister and their entourage in the air crash. However, as you mentioned, we are confident that under your guidance and leadership, there will be no disruption to Iran’s affairs.”
