Baqayee Hamaneh said the region will not witness an end to the current vicious cycle of violence as long as the Israeli regime is allowed to carry on with its atrocities with impunity.
He made the remarks on Thursday during a special United Nations Human Rights Council session. The gathering had been formed to address “the grave human rights situation” in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.
“The regional turmoil would flare up, while the criminals escape accountability because of this impunity and the occupation of Palestine sustains as a result of compromise or silence,” the envoy said.
“Administration of justice and forcing the Zionist regime to answer for its crimes against the Palestinians should turn into the international community’s urgent demand,” the official added.
Hamaneh continued that Israel’s supporters, who try to justify its savagery under the guise of “self-defense” must also be held to account for their emboldening it and obstructing justice.
He underlined Iran’s assertion that the only solution to this crisis is holding of a referendum among all of Palestine’s residents, including those who have been displaced from the land as a result of Tel Aviv’s occupation and aggression.
“Such vote would enable Palestinians to exercise their right to self-determination,” he concluded.
The Israeli military launched a bloody military onslaught against the Gaza Strip on May 10, razing many homes and civilian buildings to the ground in the already-besieged Palestinian territory.
Meanwhile, Palestinian sources reported that the death toll from Israel’s ongoing aggression against the besieged Gaza Strip has risen to at least 253 Palestinians, including tens of children and women.
The report by the Palestinian Health Ministry noted that Israel’s military aggression, which lasted for 11 days, has also wounded over 1,948 civilians, dozens of them seriously.
Meantime, retaliatory rocket attacks by Hamas and Islamic Jihad against Israeli targets came in response to Israel’s relentless airstrikes on the densely-populated enclave.
On May 16, Israeli sources said that Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups had fired around 4,000 rockets toward the occupied territories over the previous several days, surpassing the pace seen during an escalation in 2019 and the 2006 war with Lebanon's Hezbollah resistance group.
Israel had to accept self-declared ceasefire on Friday May 21.
In relevant remarks on Tuesday, Iran's Representative and Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi strongly condemned Israel’s crimes in the 12-day war against Palestine, and said that its officials must be brought to justice.
"Israel’s crimes, which are inherent violations of the norms and fundamental principles of international law, give rise to the international responsibility of the regime, and its officials must be brought to justice for such heinous crimes," Takht Ravanchi said while addressing a meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday to discuss the protection of civilians in armed conflict.
He lamented that women and children were the main victims of the war and civilian targets such as hospitals and schools were attacked.
The envoy pointed to the Zionist regime’s extensive efforts to forcibly expel Palestinians from their homes, particularly in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, where they have lived for generations, saying, "When the Palestinians protested against these illegal actions and the attack on Muslim worshipers at Al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan, Israeli military forces committed the most brutal crimes against them."
"In the recent brutal and full-scale war against Gaza, Israeli forces killed 253 Palestinians, including 66 children, 39 women and 17 elderly people, and wounded 1948 others. In addition, Israeli forces destroyed 30 health facilities, about 50 schools and other educational institutions, about 50 percent of the water facilities and 33 media offices, and damaged 43 mosques," Takht Ravanchi noted.
The ambassador stressed that, “these barbaric acts are clear examples of genocide and war crimes against humanity and violate human principles.”
"As the recent war started due to the illegal and provocative actions of the Israeli regime in Quds, especially in Al-Aqsa Mosque, the regime must be forced to stop all these actions," he stated.
