Why the West craves materialism & why the East sticks to religion

Why the West craves materialism & why the East sticks to religion, By Imran Khan

My generation grew up at a time when colonial hang up was at its peak. Our older generation had been slaves and had a huge inferiority complex of the British. The school I went to was similar to all elite schools in Pakistan. Despite gaining independent, they were, and still are, producing replicas of public schoolboys rather than Pakistanis.
I read Shakespeare, which was fine, but no Allama Iqbal — the national poet of Pakistan. The class on Islamic studies was not taken seriously, and when I left school I was considered among the elite of the country because I could speak English and wore Western clothes.
Despite periodically shouting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ in school functions, I considered my own culture backward and religion outdated. Among our group if any one talked about religion, prayed or kept a beard he was immediately branded a Mullah.
Because of the power of the Western media, our heroes were Western movie stars or pop stars. When I went to Oxford already burdened with this hang up, things didn’t get any easier. At Oxford, not just Islam, but all religions were considered anachronism.
Science had replaced religion and if something couldn’t be logically proved it did not exist. All supernatural stuff was confined to the movies. Philosophers like Darwin, who with his half-baked theory of evolution had supposedly disproved the creation of men and hence religion, were read and revered.
Moreover, European history reflected its awful experience with religion. The horrors committed by the Christian clergy during the Inquisition era had left a powerful impact on the Western mind.
To understand why the West is so keen on secularism, one should go to places like Cordoba in Spain and see the torture apparatus used during the Spanish Inquisition. Also the persecution of scientists as heretics by the clergy had convinced the Europeans that all religions are regressive.
However, the biggest factor that drove people like me away from religion was the selective Islam practiced by most of its preachers. In short, there was a huge difference between what they practiced and what they preached. Also, rather than explaining the philosophy behind the religion, there was an overemphasis on rituals.
I feel that humans are different to animals. While, the latter can be drilled, humans need to be intellectually convinced. That is why the Qur’an constantly appeals to reason. The worst, of course, was the exploitation of Islam for political gains by various individuals or groups.
Hence, it was a miracle I did not become an atheist. The only reason why I did not was the powerful religious influence my mother wielded on me since my childhood. It was not so much out of conviction but love for her that I stayed a Muslim.
However, my Islam was selective. I accepted only parts of the religion that suited me. Prayers were restricted to Eid days and occasionally on Fridays, when my father insisted on taking me to the mosque with him.
All in all I was smoothly moving to becoming a Pukka Brown Sahib. After all I had the right credentials in terms of school, university and, above all, acceptability in the English aristocracy, something that our brown sahibs would give their lives for. So what led me to do a ‘lota’ on the Brown Sahib culture and instead become a ‘desi’?
Well it did not just happen overnight.
Firstly, the inferiority complex that my generation had inherited gradually went as I developed into a world-class athlete. Secondly, I was in the unique position of living between two cultures. I began to see the advantages and the disadvantages of both societies.
In Western societies, institutions were strong while they were collapsing in our country. However, there was an area where we were and still are superior, and that is our family life. I began to realize that this was the Western society’s biggest loss. In trying to free itself from the oppression of the clergy, they had removed both God and religion from their lives.
While science, no matter how much it progresses, can answer a lot of questions — two questions it will never be able to answer: One, what is the purpose of our existence and two, what happens to us when we die?
It is this vacuum that I felt created the materialistic and the hedonistic culture. If this is the only life then one must make hay while the sun shines — and in order to do so one needs money. Such a culture is bound to cause psychological problems in a human being, as there was going to be an imbalance between the body and the soul.
Consequently, in the US, which has shown the greatest materialistic progress while giving its citizens numerous rights, almost 60 percent of the population consult psychiatrists. Yet, amazingly in modern psychology, there is no study of the human soul. Sweden and Switzerland, who provide the most welfare to their citizens, also have the highest suicide rates. Hence, man is not necessarily content with material well being and needs something more.
Since all morality has it roots in religion, once religion was removed, immorality has progressively grown since the 70s. Its direct impact has been on family life. In the UK, the divorce rate is 60 percent, while it is estimated that there are over 35 percent single mothers. The crime rate is rising in almost all Western societies, but the most disturbing fact is the alarming increase in racism. While science always tries to prove the inequality of man (recent survey showing the American Black to be genetically less intelligent than whites) it is only religion that preaches the equality of man.
Between 1991 and 1997, it was estimated that total immigration into Europe was around 520,000, and there were racially motivated attacks all over, especially in Britain, France and Germany. In Pakistan during the Afghan war, we had over four million refugees, and despite the people being so much poorer, there was no racial tension.
There was a sequence of events in the 80s that moved me toward God as the Qur’an says: “There are signs for people of understanding.” One of them was cricket. As I was a student of the game, the more I understood the game, the more I began to realize that what I considered to be chance was, in fact, the will of Allah. A pattern which became clearer with time. But it was not until Salman Rushdie’s “Satanic Verses” that my understanding of Islam began to develop.
People like me who were living in the Western world bore the brunt of anti-Islam prejudice that followed the Muslim reaction to the book. We were left with two choices: fight or flight. Since I felt strongly that the attacks on Islam were unfair, I decided to fight. It was then I realized that I was not equipped to do so as my knowledge of Islam was inadequate. Hence I started my research and for me a period of my greatest enlightenment. I read scholars like Ali Shariati, Muhammad Asad, Iqbal, Gai Eaton, plus of course, a study of Qur’an.
I will try to explain as concisely as is possible, what “discovering the truth” meant for me. When the believers are addressed in the Qur’an, it always says, “Those who believe and do good deeds.” In other words, a Muslim has dual function, one toward God and the other toward fellow human beings.
The greatest impact of believing in God for me, meant that I lost all fear of human beings. The Qur’an liberates man from man when it says that life and death and respect and humiliation are God’s jurisdiction, so we do not have to bow before other human beings.
Moreover, since this is a transitory world where we prepare for the eternal one, I broke out of the self-imposed prisons, such as growing old (such a curse in the Western world, as a result of which, plastic surgeons are having a field day), materialism, ego, what people say and so on. It is important to note that one does not eliminate earthly desires. But instead of being controlled by them, one controls them.
By following the second part of believing in Islam, I have become a better human being. Rather than being self-centered and living for the self, I feel that because the Almighty gave so much to me, in turn I must use that blessing to help the less privileged. This I did by following the fundamentals of Islam rather than becoming a Kalashnikov-wielding fanatic.
I have become a tolerant and a giving human being who feels compassion for the underprivileged. Instead of attributing success to myself, I know it is because of God’s will, hence I learned humility instead of arrogance.
Also, instead of the snobbish Brown Sahib attitude toward our masses, I believe in egalitarianism and strongly feel against the injustice done to the weak in our society. According to the Qur’an, “Oppression is worse than killing.” In fact only now do I understand the true meaning of Islam, if you submit to the will of Allah, you have inner peace.
Through my faith, I have discovered strength within me that I never knew existed and that has released my potential in life. I feel that in Pakistan we have selective Islam. Just believing in God and going through the rituals is not enough. One also has to be a good human being. I feel there are certain Western countries with far more Islamic traits than us in Pakistan, especially in the way they protect the rights of their citizens, or for that matter their justice system. In fact some of the finest individuals I know live there.
What I dislike about them is their double standards in the way they protect the rights of their citizens but consider citizens of other countries as being somehow inferior to them as human being, e.g. dumping toxic waste in the Third World, advertising cigarettes that are not allowed in the West and selling drugs that are banned in the West.
One of the problems facing Pakistan is the polarization of two reactionary groups. On the one side is the Westernized group that looks upon Islam through Western eyes and has inadequate knowledge about the subject. It reacts strongly to anyone trying to impose Islam in society and wants only a selective part of the religion. On the other extreme is the group that reacts to this Westernized elite and in trying to become a defender of the faith, takes up such intolerant and self-righteous attitudes that are repugnant to the spirit of Islam.
What needs to be done is to somehow start a dialogue between the two extreme. In order for this to happen, the group on whom the greatest proportion of our educational resources are spent in this country must study Islam properly.
Whether they become practicing Muslims or believe in God is entirely a personal choice. As the Qur’an tells us there is “no compulsion in religion.” However, they must arm themselves with knowledge as a weapon to fight extremism. Just by turning up their noses at extremism the problem is not going to be solved.
The Qur’an calls Muslims “the middle nation”, not of extremes. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was told to simply give the message and not worry whether people converted or not, therefore, there is no question in Islam of forcing your opinions on anyone else.
Moreover, we are told to respect other religions, their places of worship and their prophets. It should be noted that no Muslim missionaries or armies ever went to Malaysia or Indonesia. The people converted to Islam due to the high principles and impeccable character of the Muslim traders. At the moment, the worst advertisements for Islam are the countries with their selective Islam, especially where religion is used to deprive people of their rights. In fact, a society that obeys fundamentals of Islam has to be a liberal one.
If Pakistan’s Westernized class starts to study Islam, not only will it be able to help society fight sectarianism and extremism, but it will also make them realize what a progressive religion Islam is. They will also be able to help the Western world by articulating Islamic concepts. Recently, Prince Charles accepted that the Western world can learn from Islam. But how can this happen if the group that is in the best position to project Islam gets its attitudes from the West and considers Islam backward? Islam is a universal religion and that is why our Prophet (peace be upon him) was called a Mercy for all mankind. (Internews)

The Iranian Crisis from the Point of View of a Progressive Arab

WRITTEN BY ADIB S KAWAR

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a theocratic regime that since day one of its life had dedicated itself to confront colonialism and Zionism, and expelled the Zionist diplomatic mission to the Shah’s imperial court and handed its premises to the Palestinian Arab people, an act that international Zionism had never forgotten. The New republic replaced an autocratic imperial regime, which cooperated with the American intelligence organization, CIA, to overthrow the first democratically elected government of Prime Minister Muhammad Mosadiq and reinstalled the Shah on his imperial peacock’s thrown. As well known the Shah allied himself with international colonialism and Zionism, Zionism the long arm of colonialism in the Arab homeland and its neighborhood, and declared enmity to any power that steps in to support Arab resistance and struggle for its independence a liberation.

The Arab proverb says: “If my libeling came from the blemished it’s a testimony that I am complete”. This exactly applies to one of the leading Zionist terrorists who was one of the founders of the Zionist entity and still continues with his endless mission of plundering, terrorizing, destructing, threatening its neighborhood with woe and grief and whatever, he is none other than the president of the Zionist entity, Shimon Peres, who said while addressing the Jewish Agency (with wishful thinking), “It is difficult to say who shall disappear first in Iran, uranium or the miserable regime, and we are hopeful that it will be the regime”, Peres who is considered to be the father of the “Israeli” atomic bomb arsenal of 200 to 400 A bombs that are used to threaten anybody who would “threaten the security” of the rogue state of “Israel” continued to say, “Fighting the leaders of the Iranian regime is more urgent than fighting its bombs (atomic)”. Peres attacked the Supreme leader of the Islamic Republic by saying, “how dare he claims that we asked the Iranian people to go out to the street and threaten their lives”.  Surely the old fox who keeps repeating the above quotes live, Ali Khamenei as us all are well aware that Peres and his Zionist gang are (The Zionist Entity) are all the time after United States administrations to grant them the green light to bomb Iran’s nuclear installations, which Iran keeps confirming that they are meant for civil purposes and not for military use, and if the U.S. is not willing to join the Zionist entity in its proposed attack on Iran is to be given the green light to do the job by itself, and possibly utilizing only mini A bombs, we assume that the hesitation of the American administration is due of its fear that its strategic Zionist ally could be wiped out by an Iranian retaliation.

Another member of the Zionist clique, minister of strategic affairs, Moshe Yaalon, repeated Peres’ wishful thinking saying: “Iran’s wave of protestations shall lead to a revolution under the presidential nominee former prime minister for ten years, Mir Hussein Mousavi, against the Islamic regime.  Mousavi and his wife brought new winds that are represented by openness, so I shall repeat that there will be a revolution in Iran.” Yaalon added: “In spite of this it shall not change anything regarding the nuclear matter, but what happened is encouraging for the west, which is related to a wide look towards what is happening in the region represented by the confrontation between ‘Jihadism’ and the west”. Which we are sure means resistance against the Zionist project in Palestine and its neighborhood that Iran supports and arms, so it is the prime enemy of colonialism in  its deferent forms that Zionism is today’s most outstanding example.

On the other hand the Zionist Prime Minister, Benyamin Netanyahu, with his wishful thinking too, mixes between the Iranian People and the long ago deposed Shah by the same people, he told the German paper, Bildt: “There is no conflict between ‘Israel’ and the Iranian people that would have changed its government had it been free in its election.  Good relations between Iran and ‘Israel’ is possible if a new leadership takes hold of the government”. Netanyahu is trying to remind us of the “peaceful relations”, which were prevailing between ‘Israel’ and the Shah’s regime in the old days, and added: “I believe that the mask had fallen from over the face of the regime in Iran, and what we see there is a great thirst for freedom among a part of the population”. Do we have to remind Netanyahu of then unending struggle of the indigenous population of the land that Zionism invaded and occupied and trying to fully replace them in it, why should he care for a people that he and his gang are threatening to bomb, and not for the great thirst for freedom among a part (all the Palestinian) of the population.

Here too we have former Zionist minister of war, Shoal Mofaz, who is of Iranian descent and well known for practicing repression, targeted assassinations, organizing land theft in addition to all sorts of assaults against the indigenous Arab people of Palestine, Mofaz told Chanel 2 of the “Israeli” TV: “There is no dispute regarding Iran’s ability to cross the technological line, it progresses daily on development of atomic energy, Iran is a great rocket power, and if it is able to own the atomic it shall form a great existential threat for ‘Israel’,” so it is natural for him to claim that.“The Iranian people is connected with the west, and aims at becoming like other peoples away from repression’s authority, and fear that controls its fate.” Which is what his victims had been fighting for since decades, for the Zionist entity, as Mofaz said, Iran is an existential threat and for putting it at hold from threatening its Arab neighborhood.

The Zionist entity’s attack on Iran, though claiming that is forwarded against the ruling Iranian regime and no the Iranian people. The Zionist entity is simply the spearhead of western colonialism, which is still dreaming to retain its influence and control of the “third world” politically, militarily and economically, but matters are slipping out of its control starting with the twentieth century successful independence movement, and what happened in China twenty years ago namely the failed ‘Tiananmen’ square, revolution. Which though was a call for democracy and free speech, but with western interference it was meant to be a “right that was meant to be wrong”.

On the subject Arab writer, Dr. Fayez Abu Chamailah, wrote in his article entitled Iran shall go out stronger. “Twenty years ago foreign powers conspired against China, their aim was to prevent the Chinese people from reaching a position that they are in today. Incitement took place when journalist, workers and students started gathering in ‘Tiananmen’ square demanding democracy and right of expression, and succeeded with American and western support in starring millions of hungry Chinese, in the midst of a big roar in the western media for freedom of expression, and spreading the teachings of democracy, but China that is dreaming of a better future, knew the goal behind these gatherings in ‘Tiananmen’ square, and dealt with the agitators who are stirred by foreign powers in how to protect China’s interests, and succeeded in overcoming the difficult internal test, and escaped from the conspiracy, to become twenty years later the feared international economical power.” And, as well known the United States is calling on China to become its lifeguard to pull it out of its financial and economical crisis.

Fehmy Huwaidy, an outstanding Egyptian Arab political, writer wrote describing the Iranian elections in his article, ‘Iran if it becomes moderate’, “I am not comparing elections in Iran, for example, with in England, but in comparison to elections in all the Arab homeland, true it is incomplete in  its first episode, as the Council of the Protection of the Constitution gives itself the right to accept certain nominees and refuses others, but during its following episodes Iranian presidential elections are always marked with seriousness and relative fairness, candidates competed with outstanding  severity, and the authority always took an impartial position in relation to all of them. The Chinese official Television broadcasted documentaries showing the life story of each of them, it also broadcasted the debates that took place between them live, and thus the Iranian people were put in the picture in a balanced manner about each of them before the elections.”

As a progressive Arab I am not supposed to theoretically ally myself with a theological regime, but from the point of view of our interest as Arabs fighting colonialism and Zionism, and as the present Iranian regime is among the very few forces that support our cause especially the Palestinian cause, and its Arab resistance organizations, we owe the Iranian regime gratitude, and we are ready to defend it against its foreign and certain internal critics and enemies. Noting that not all of them are classified under the same category. Not all of them are seculars in contrast to the theological regime, and many of them held very high posts under it and for long years. we don’t claim that they are all in the service of or ally themselves with Colonialism and Zionism, though some so-called nationalists criticize Mahmoud Ahmadi Najad for being too lenient with Arabs, and in particular Sheikh Mahdi Kharoubi criticized Najad in one of their political debates for being the first Iranian president to visit the United Arab Emirates, which we suppose is due to the conflict regarding the three Arab Gulf occupied islands.

Also Fehmy Huwaidy added: “Among the very moderate there are some who go further in their extremism(!!!) by considering that there are no advanced or developed and nationalist states with a promising future in the region except Iran and Israel, thus it is very important to tighten relations between them so as to become a locomotive that pulls the region from its backwardness, and there is  more than one researcher  in Iranian strategic matters who expressed this idea in papers that were discussed in strategic circles.” This is a very dangerous trend of thought to follow by some Iranian so-called intellectuals. Such so-called intellectuals should be categorized among colonialists who are still dreaming of an imperialist Iran, and cannot realize that Zionism has no permanent friends. Though the Zionist entity would never have seen light had it not been for British’ great help, Zionist leaders committed terrorism against British forces occupying Palestine and preparing Zionist colonialists to be ready to uproot the indigenous Arab population. A more recent example is Zionist spying against all present and former administrations starting with the White House itself.

Engineer Mir Hussein Mousavi in a lecture he delivered in one of Tehran Universities raised the motto of “Iran first”, while other reformists criticized Najad’s government for the help it extends to Hezbollah’s resistance in Lebanon and Hamas movement in Palestine, as considering it as a waste of Iranian people’s money, as well as other signs meaning disconnecting Iran from resistance and the Palestinian cause, and support the settlement of the Palestinian question, their excuse is simple and could be marketed easily, namely Iran is not an Arab country, and thus should not overbid its Arab neighbors and be more Arab than Arabs!!!

Such trend of thought and action is enough for the west that is known for its unlimited support to the Zionist entity to express its joy and high appreciation of the reformist movement to destabilize Iran and its regime, which has nothing to do with the standard slogans of democracy, freedom of expression and free elections. We don’t have to return to old history and remind the west about the above mentioned example of free election that brought Prime Minister Muhammad Mosadiq to rule and the fall America’s puppet Shah Muhammad Reza Bahlavi, we just return to the very recent history, namely the free and democratic Palestinian election conducted about three years ago, which brought Hamas to power, but instead of being hailed and complemented, Gaza was put under severe siege by the Zionist entity and its western and some so-called Arab moderate regimes that are repeating the same attack on Iran.

To close we quote our friend Raja Chmayel’s the following piece of sarcasm, that fits our article:

1979 the US Embassy in Tehran was visited
and now someone wants a re-match ….
The War on Iran has started

Regardless who has won those elections,
the man who wanted to wipe off Israel
from the Map , is going to be punished. The Regime that helped Hamas and Hezbollah
will be punished…………
The culture that calls USA and UK as being the devil
and puts questions marks on the Holocaust
will be punished………
They shall gather,
all the bad-looser-of-the elections
all the chic-high-society
all the dissidents for whatever cause
all the modernists and pseudo-liberals
all the jet-set of Tehran
all the Parrots and the Monkeys imitating the West
everyone who does not like theocracy
all the supporters of westernisation
all the Nike and Gucci fashion-fans of Tehran
Promise them Heaven on Earth,
and 25 Starbucks within the first year
and 145 Mac. Donald's as well….
And start a fancy-uprising from within
thereafter the son of Shah shall return to his throne
and Oprah Winfrey shall direct the new Iran TV stations
owned by Fox and Judd Bush..

Ahmadinejad demands US apology for 'crimes' against Iran

Iranian president responds to conciliatory messages from Obama and says Bush has gone into 'trash can of history'

The US should apologise for "crimes" it has committed against Iran if it wants a better relationship with Tehran, the Iranian president said today, after recent overtures to the Muslim world from the new administration in Washington.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's uncompromising tone followed a conciliatory message from Barack Obama, the US president, earlier this week when he told the Islamic world: "We are not your enemies." In his inauguration last week, Obama offered to extend a hand of peace if Iran "unclenched its fist".
At a rally in western Iran today, broadcast live on national television, Ahmadinejad said Iran would welcome a change in US policy provided it involved a withdrawal of American troops from abroad and an apology to Iran."Those who say they want to make change, this is the change they should make: they should apologise to the Iranian nation and try to make up for their dark background and the crimes they have committed against the Iranian nation," he said.
The Iranian leader listed a range of "crimes", such as trying to block what Tehran says is a peaceful nuclear power programme, hindering Iran's development since the 1979 revolution and other actions by US administrations dating back more than 60 years.
Ahmadinejad had harsh words for George Bush, who he said "has gone into the trash can of history with a very black and shameful file full of treachery and killings. He left and, God willing, he will go to hell."
In a break with his predecessor, Obama has dangled the prospect of direct talks with Tehran without preconditions. Susan Rice, the new US ambassador to the United Nations, has pledged "vigorous" and "direct" nuclear diplomacy with Iran but warned that pressure would increase if it refused to halt uranium enrichment.
Analysts believe Obama's election offers "a once-in-a-generation opportunity" for a new start in relations between Tehran and Washington, which were severed after students seized the US embassy in Tehran and took more than 90 hostages following the 1979 revolution.
"They will never get a new US president who is as balanced as Obama's public statements are, who talks about wanting to engage in a respectful way with Iran and who seems less encumbered by the baggage of the past," a western diplomat told the Associated Press. "It is in Iran's clear interest to engage." He warned of the risk that hardliners clinging to a "we're-winning-you're-losing rhetoric" may prevail.
An Iranian opposition politician, Ebrahim Yazdi, said he did not expect movement on the issue of US relations before June, when Ahmadinejad is expected to seek re-election. Yazdi said better ties were in Iran's strategic and economic interest, adding: "The political atmosphere in Iran is now ripe, is suitable for direct negotiation with the United States."
The five permanent members of the UN security council – Britain, China, France, Russia and the US – along with Germany have offered Tehran economic and energy incentives in exchange for halting its uranium enrichment programme, which the west sees as a cover to acquire a nuclear weapons capability. Tehran is pressing on with the programme, which it says is geared toward electricity generation.

The Leader’s View of Unity Between the Shia and the Sunni

Today, one of the main goals of the arrogant powers and the US is to foment discord. And the best way to do so is to foment discord among Shia and Sunni Muslims. You can see what the mercenaries of the arrogant powers say today in regard to the issue of Iraq and what propaganda they spread. They think they can sow the seeds of discord this way. It has been many years that the arrogant powers and the Western expansionist powers have been following such policies. We should stay vigilant against these policies. We should be vigilant at all times and on all fronts. The conflict between the Shia and the Sunni is what the US truly desires. Muslim nations should stay vigilant and should not underestimate the enemy, its plots, or even its small moves. They should stay vigilant and awake. Today, Islamic nations and governments must get united and develop unanimity among themselves. I deem it necessary to warn our own nation, the Iraqi and Pakistani nations, and other Muslim nations that they need to act against religious conflicts and the conflict between the Shia and the Sunni. Today, I notice some groups who are - through an organized plot - trying to cause splits among Muslims in the name of Shia and Sunni. The massacres that take place, the explosions which happen in mosques and hussayniyyahs and during prayers are undoubtedly organized by the evil Zionists and arrogant powers. Such incidents are not organized by Muslims. We have information which indicates that the Zionists and the mercenaries of the enemies of Islam are either directly or indirectly involved in all the incidents which happen in different parts of the Muslim world - in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries.
Of course, I do not mean to say that Shias should convert to Sunni Islam or Sunnis should convert to Shia Islam. I do not intend to say that all religions should be amalgamated into one religion. Rather, what I intend to say is that Shias and Sunnis should not make scientific efforts only to lend credence to their own beliefs. Making scientific efforts is a very good thing. There is nothing wrong with getting involved in such efforts. There are some people who reject all denominations in order to create unity among Muslims. However, this is not an appropriate solution. The solution is to prove the truth of the existing denominations. The followers of different denominations must continue doing their duties, and they must maintain friendly relations with the followers of other denominations. They ought to write scientific books within scientific settings, not non-scientific ones. We do not oppose those who can logically prove their arguments. But those who try to foment schism through their words, actions, and plots serve the enemies' interests. Both Sunnis and Shias should stay vigilant against such efforts. Everyone follows his own denomination and shows respect for his beliefs and moral values. This is a right that everyone deserves. However, respect for one's beliefs does not mean that one could offend against others' moral values. We all believe in Islam, the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.), and Kaaba. We all say prayers, go to Hajj, and believe in jihad and Sharia. The matters over which we disagree are much less than those we agree upon. The enemies of Islam are trying to foment schism among Shia and Sunni Muslims not only in Iran, but also in all parts of the Islamic world. Let me add a point here. You should not consider the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) as a cause for disagreement among Sunni and Shia Muslims - or among the different Islamic sects. The Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) is the cause of unity and not discord among Muslims. Our brothers and sisters from across the country should believe in the fact that the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) is the axis of unity among all Muslims. All Muslims are respectful towards him - whether they are Sunnis or Shias. There was a small group by the name of "Navasib" who were the enemies of the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.). Throughout the history of Islam - both during the era of the Umayyad dynasty and the Abbasid dynasty - there were groups of people who opposed Amir al-Mu'minin (a.s.). But the Majority of those who believe in Islam - both Shia and Sunni Muslims - praise the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.). If you take a look, you will see that the Sunni Imams who were experts in Islamic jurisprudence praised the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) in their poems. Some of the famous poems about Amir al-Mu'minin (a.s.) have been composed by Al-Shafi'i. Al-Shafi'i has praised Imam Ali (a.s.) in his poems. Of course, this is not limited to Imam Ali (a.s.) only. Sunni Imams are respectful towards all the Imams. The high position of these prominent figures is known to us - Shia Muslims. Unfortunately, there are some people in the Muslim world who are ready to commit any crimes in order to form bonds with the US and other arrogant powers and foment schism among Shia and Sunni Muslims. Today, I can see some people in our neighboring countries who have planned to foment schism among Sunni and Shia Muslims, and followers of other religions, in order to pursue their own interests. Their efforts are aimed at pursuing their illegitimate interests in Muslim countries. We should stay vigilant against such efforts. Those who provoke Sunni Muslims against the Shia and Shia Muslims against the Sunnis support neither the Shia nor the Sunni. They are opposed to Islam. "Compassionate among themselves" [the Holy Quran 48: 29]. This means that Muslims should act kindly and mercifully towards one another. On the one hand, they advocate "Ghulat" and "Navasib" and say that Shias and Sunnis are enemies - unfortunately some religious fanatics believe such claims - and on the other hand, they tempt Shia Muslims to offend against the moral values and beliefs of the Sunnis. The enemies' plots are aimed at fomenting schism among Sunni and Shia Muslims. The enemies might follow plots which you are unaware of. Therefore, you should be aware of the enemies' plots and identify your enemies at all times. "And certainly thou canst recognize them by the tone of (their) speech." [The Holy Quran 47: 30]. You could even identify your enemies through their words.
We take pride in the fact that our people avoid ethnic quarrels and conflicts where there are ethnic or religious differences in the country, and where there is a possibility for such ethnic conflicts. This is what the enemies do not like. The conflict between Sunni and Shia Muslims is very important to the enemies of Islam. Differences and conflicts among the Islamic Ummah would undermine the spirituality, purity, power, grandeur, and national unity of Muslims, and as it is cited in the Holy Quran: "And [lest] your power depart." [The Holy Quran 8: 46]. One factor that could play a central role in this regard is the holy being of the Prophet (s.w.a.). Muslims and Islamic intellectuals should pay attention to and rely on the character and teachings of the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) as a focal point. The issue of unity among Muslims should be taken seriously by all Islamic sects - Shias, Sunnis, ad followers of different Shia and Sunni sects. Today, Muslims should take the issue of Islamic unity seriously. The meaning of Islamic unity is evident. Unity is a vital need for all Muslims. It is not a trivial matter or a slogan only. All Islamic communities should get united and act as a unified front. Of course, unity is a complex issue. Creating unity is a complex process as well. Unity among Islamic communities means that Muslims should be tolerant of religious differences, the differences in their traditions and ways of life, and the differences in fiqh. Unity among Islamic nations signifies that Muslim nations should act as a unified front in regard to issues related to the Muslim world and assist one another. It also means that Muslim nations should not use their resources against one another.

The Saudis’ relentless drive to destroy the historic sites of Islam

By

Muslims are under attack on almost every front, from the military to the cultural and areas in between. Not only are tens of thousands of Muslims being slaughtered by foreign forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Chechnya, but in many Muslim countries (Pakistan, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco, for instance) their own armies are attacking them as well. The military assaults are compounded by cultural attacks from the West. But perhaps even this grim reality pales into insignificance when compared to what the Saudis are doing in the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, jointly known to the Muslims as the Haramayn. A toxic mixture of greed and Wahhabi zealotry has led to the destruction of Islamic monuments, which, in a few years, will have completely wiped out the rich historical heritage of early Islam forever.

While most Middle Eastern oil-producing countries are gripped by construction-mania, turning deserts into imitations of New York, Houston or Las Vegas, the Saudis have embarked on an enterprise that will destroy the physical heritage of the Ummah. If the Saudis had concentrated on building Riyadh in the image of Las Vegas few Muslims would be bothered, but they are going after Makkah and Madinah, obliterating the historical sites of Islam and replacing them with concrete and glass towers that not only surround the Masjid al-Haram but dwarf it, assaulting its spiritual ambience.
Most Muslims are already denied the opportunity to perform Hajj because of exorbitant prices that continue to increase each year. Instead of being the spiritual journey that Muslims long for, Hajj has been turned into a financial racket in which Saudi royals and their allies gouge the hujjaj of their life’s savings. Categories of Hajj have been developed; travel agents in the West now offer Five-Star Hajj packages as if the Hajj were a holiday trip to Disneyland. Such distortion of one of the fundamental ibadaat of Islam is completely contrary to the spirit of Hajj and the principle of equality and brotherhood that the Hajj is supposed to demonstrate, as emphasized in the Qur’an and exemplified by Allah’s Messenger (saws). But the House of Saud is not interested in the teachings of the Qur’an or Sunnah, although they are quick to denounce as bida’ any act of which they do not approve. The Saudis’ own mega-bidas are justified by their paid agents and court-ulama by spurious arguments for such violations of Islam’s fundamental principles. Were the Prophet (saws) to appear today, the Wahhabis might well accuse him too of introducing innovations in the deen and indulging in bida’ (nastaghfirullah min dhalik).
Although the court ulama seem to find nothing wrong with the Saudi desecration of Islam’s historical sites and the commercialization of Hajj, it has not escaped the attention of others, including some non-Muslims. Zvika Krieger, for instance, writing in the New Republic magazine on March 26, drew attention to a promotional DVD that lures future “spiritual tourists” to Makkah. Prepared for the Abraj al-Bait Towers, a giant new skyscraper complex that will be built at a cost of US$6 billion just across the street from one of the entrances to the Haram, it “shows a beautiful woman sitting in one of the towers’ luxury apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook thousands of pilgrims circling the Ka’aba below. Eyes flashing a come-hither stare from beneath her tightly wound headscarf, she asks prospective buyers in Arabic, ‘Would you like to be here in this place in front of the Ka’aba year after year?'” Must hujjaj be enticed with such vulgar ads to visit the House of Allah? Surely they are coming as pilgrims and not as tourists going to a casino in Monte Carlo or Las Vegas?
Beyond this sort of vulgarity lies the even greater issue of historic buildings and sites that have either been destroyed or are scheduled for destruction. The vandalism to which the Baqi’ Cemetery in Madinah has been subjected will seem minor if the Saudis succeed in their nefarious designs for the Prophet’s (saws) grave in Madinah. Some ten years ago, Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadi’i, a student at the University of Madinah, wrote a thesis titled “About the Dome Built over the Grave of the Messenger,” sponsored by Shaykh Hammad al-Ansari. In this paper, Muqbil ibn Hadi demanded that the Prophet’s grave be brought out of the Mosque. He said that its presence and the dome over it were major innovations (bidas) and that both have to be destroyed. His thesis was applauded and received high marks from the university, confirming their complete disrespect of the Messenger of Allah (saws).
How this upstart Saudi came to the conclusion that building the dome was a bida’ or that the grave needed to be taken out of the Masjid-e Nabawi needs critical review. Is he more knowledgeable about Islam than the illustrious Sahaba (Companions) of the noble messenger of Allah (ra), who did not object and in fact paid great respect to the messenger (saw) by visiting his grave? Further, two of his closest companions are also buried beside him. Does Muqbil ibn Hadi know more than Abu-Bakr and Umar (ra)? The question that Muslims must ask is: what right do the Saudis have to do whatever they like to these sites? The Saudis do not own the Haramayn; they are usurpers of the Arabian Peninsula, whose name they have illegally changed to “Saudi” Arabia. This is bida: Allah’s Messenger named this land the Arabian Peninsula (Jazeerat al-Arab). In their zeal to impose their own distorted version of Islam on everyone, they have embarked on wholesale destruction of Islam’s historical sites. Last year the city planning board of Madinah changed the colour of the famous green dome of the Prophet’s Mosque and painted it silver. The green dome identifies and symbolizes the Prophet’s grave; due to the Mosque’s expansion, it has now been surrounded, yet it is a unique visual focal point. Was the purpose to pave the way for its destruction, since most Muslims might not even realize what had happened if they hear or notice that a silver dome has been destroyed in Masjid-e Nabawi? After all, a number of silver domes in the Masjid-e Nabawi have already been obliterated using the pretext of expansion and renovation. Intense protests by concerned citizens forced the board to restore the dome to its original color, but it would be wrong to conclude that the Wahhabis have realized the error of their ways.
In their zeal to “save” Muslims from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and bida’ (innovations in the deen), the Wahhabis have been involved in the destruction of historic buildings and sites for decades. “It is not permitted to glorify buildings and historical sites,” proclaimed Sheikh Abdul-Aziz bin Baz, the kingdom’s chief alim, in a much-publicized fatwa in 1994 when he was alive. He went on: “Such action would lead to shirk (polytheism). … So it is necessary to reject such acts and to warn others away from them.” But the Wahhabi zealots are not content with mere warnings. They have embarked on a plan, in conjunction with the hordes of Saudi princes, to destroy Islam’s heritage. One is constrained to ask how many Muslims have become mushriks by visiting these places and what right the Wahhabis have to prevent Muslims from doing so?
Dr Irfan al-Alawi, historian, founder and former executive director of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation, who is one of the most vocal opponents of the destruction of the Haramayn and their environs, says that last year the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs distributed a pamphlet in the Masjid-e Nabawi calling for the demolition of the green dome. Endorsed by Abdul-Aziz al-Sheikh, the kingdom’s current grand mufti, the pamphlet brazenly declared: “The green dome shall be demolished and the three graves [where the Prophet, Abu Bakr and Umar are laid to rest] flattened in the Prophet’s Mosque.” The groundwork for such sacrilegious statements was prepared by another prominent Saudi scholar, the late Muhammad ibn al-Uthaymeen, who for 35 years delivered khutbas in the Masjid al-Haram. “We hope one day we’ll be able to destroy the green dome of the Prophet Muhammed [saws],” he said, in a recording provided by Dr Alawi.
Dr Alawi estimates that 300 historic sites have been destroyed or are scheduled for destruction. An old house that had belonged to Umm al-Mu’mineen Khadijah al-Kubra (ra) was recently razed to make room for a public toilet facility, among other things. The birthplace of the Messenger (saw) in Makkah was first turned into a library and named “Maktabat Makka al-Mukarrama”, and is now being turned into a parking lot. While libraries are important, the plan was not based on the Wahhabis’ desire for learning but on their determination to destroy all vestiges of Islam’s heritage. The few remaining historical sites in Makkah can be counted on one hand and will probably not survive much past the next Hajj, according to Dr Alawi. “It is incredible how little respect is paid to the House of Allah [in Makkah].”
An ATM (cash-dispensing machine) has opened on the site where the ancient mosque named after the first khalifah, Abu-Bakr Siddiq (ra), once stood. The sites of the historic battles at Uhud and Badr have become parking lots. The graves of Amir Hamza (ra) and the other shuhada of Uhud have suffered even greater indignity: garbage litters the site and the Wahhabis expressly forbid any identification-markers on them, again under the spurious excuse that this would lead to shirk. The 1,200-year-old mosque and tomb of Sayyid Imam al-Uraidhi ibn Ja’far al-Sadiq, four miles from Masjid-e Nabawi in Madinah, was destroyed by dynamite and flattened on August 13, 2002. Imam al-Uraidhi was ninth in line from the Prophet (saw).
The Wahhabis’ zealotry works in tandem with the greed of thousands of Saudi “royals”–”sons, daughters and grandsons of Abdul-Aziz ibn Saud, founder of the Saudi dynasty. Destruction of Islam’s historical sites facilitates the construction of hotels, restaurants and other modern structures on the pretext of providing better services for the hujjaj. This is a complete fraud: the overwhelming majority of hujjaj will never be able to afford the kind of prices such hotels charge.
To get an idea of what is afoot, consider this report by the Saudi British Bank (SABB), one of the kingdom’s biggest lenders. It estimates that $30 billion will be invested in construction and infrastructure in Makkah alone, from local and foreign companies, in the next four years. Up to 130 new skyscrapers are anticipated, including the $6-billion Abraj al-Bait Towers, a seven-tower project that, once completed in 2009, will be one of the largest buildings in the world, with a 60-floor, 2,000-room hotel; a 1,500-person convention centre; two heliports; and a four-storey mall that will house, among 600 other outlets, Starbucks, the Body Shop, UK-based clothing line Topshop (Kate Moss is a guest designer), and Tiffany & Co. Rich ‘pilgrims’ can already shop at cosmetic superstore MAC, perfumery VaVaVoom, and Claire’s Accessories. H&M and Cartier are on the way. “All the top brands are flocking here,” says John Sfakianakis, SABB’s chief economist, proudly. Crass materialism of the worst kind is replacing the spiritual aspects of Hajj, all in the name of progress. When the house of Abu-Bakr (ra) was destroyed to make room for Makkah’s Hilton Hotel, Ivor McBurney, a spokesman for Hilton, had the gall to say: “We saw tremendous opportunities to tap into Saudi Arabia’s religious tourism segment.”
Most Muslims visiting Makkah long to climb to the top of Jabal al-Nur (“the mountain of light”), to visit the Cave of Hira. It was to this cave that the Prophet (saws) used to retire in the month of Ramadan for prayer and meditation. He (saws) received the first revelations of the Qur’an while in the cave. The Wahhabi zealots want to destroy the mountain to prevent pilgrims from visiting the cave. At the foot of the hill the Wahhabis have posted a fatwa: “The Prophet Muhammed (saws) did not permit us to climb on to this hill, not to pray here, not to touch stones, and tie knots on trees…” Can the Wahhabis provide any evidence that he forbade Muslims from going there, or are their rants based on their hatred of Islam and the Muslims’ attachment to and love for Allah’s Beloved Messenger?
By contrast, there is no doubt that both the Qur’an and the Prophet (saws) absolutely forbid Muslims to take the kuffar as their awliya (masters and protectors), yet Wahhabi ulama have never issued a fatwa condemning the subservience of the House of Saud to the greatest enemies of Islam. As recently as last May, US president George Bush was in the kingdom. Bush has the blood of millions of Muslims on his hands; perhaps that is of little concern to the Saudis, but if Muslims wish to climb the Jabal al-Nur to reach the Cave of Hira and link with the history of divine revelation, the Wahhabis go berserk. The Muslims’ devotion to the Sunnah so irks the Wahhabis that they want to destroy an entire mountain. Such thoughts can only emanate from demonic minds. Perhaps in a few years’ time the mountain will be dynamited to build a hotel owned by some prince, or even another parking lot.
At every step, the Saudis are violating the principles of Islam. For instance, part of the $6 billion funding for Abraj al-Bait Towers is coming from the King Abdul Aziz Endowment (Waqf), which the towers’ developers conveniently describe as a “religious property” created to serve interests “vital to the welfare of Islamic society.” What religious interest is being served and why is it considered vital to the interests of the Islamic society when the Saudi royals line their pockets with money even stolen from Waqf Funds? It is appallingly hypocritical and criminal of them to do so, but it is their wanton destruction of irreplaceable historical sites that is inexcusable.
“It’s not just our heritage, it’s the evidence of the story of the Prophet,” according to Dr Alawi. “What can we say now? ‘This parking lot was the first school of Islam’? ‘There used to be a mountain here where the Prophet Muhammed (saws) made a speech’? … What’s the difference between history and legend?” he asks. “Evidence,” he replies without waiting for an answer, “that the Wahhabi zealots are busy obliterating.” Regrettably, few people in the Muslim world have expressed any great concern, much less alarm, to prevent the Saudis’ vandalism in order to preserve the most significant history and monuments of Islam.
The important question is why there is such indifference among Muslims to the destruction of the symbols and sites of Islam.

The Saudis’ relentless drive to destroy the historic sites of Islam (Tamil)
