Why the Outrage? “Jewish Power” Party is the New Norm in Israeli Politics

Immediately after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu forgedan alliance with the fringe political group, Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power), a widespread outrage ensued.

The anger did not emanate only from the Center, Left and Arab parties, but from some in the Right as well. Even the pro-Israel lobby in the US, known for its hawkish political views, spoke out against the sinister union.

“The views of Otzma Yehudit”, the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) tweeted, “are reprehensible. They do not reflect the core values that are the very foundation of the State of Israel.”

But what if they do? And what if “Otzma Yehudit” is but a different political articulation of mainstream Israeli views, reflecting the very “core values” that even AIPAC has been blindly defending since its inception in 1953?

Prior to the alliance between Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, Rafi Peretz’s far-right Jewish Home, and Otzma Yehudit, which was struck on February 20, Israel was hardly a liberal democracy that shunned racism and embraced political pluralism. Indeed, it must be understood that the inclusion of Otzma Yehudit in Israel’s mainstream political scene is consistent with the moral corruption of Israeli politics as a whole.

To protest the alliance between Netanyahu and the fanatical leaders of Otzma Yehudit is to suggest that mainstream Israeli politicians don’t represent the very chauvinistic, racist and violent ideals that the extremist party has championed since its formation in 2012.

Otzma Yehudit was resurrected by the followers of Brooklyn-born Rabbi Meir Kahane, who has advocated the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and has led his followers in many violent incursions against Palestinian Arab communities, in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories.

His Kach party, banned in Israel four years after its formation in 1984, was even then not rejected for its “racist policies” as many in the media are now suggesting. The party operated outside the confines of the Israeli government agenda, thus it was forced out, but its violent ideas persisted in the Knesset until this day. If racism against Palestinians was truly a Kach-championed political anomaly, how is one to explain the racist Nation-State law, which defines Israel as a “the nation-state of the Jewish people” – elevating everything Jewish and degrading everything Palestinian?

The law is hardly different from Otzma Yehudit’s own constitution, which defines Israel as a “Jewish state in its character, its national symbols and its legal values”, also defining Hebrew as Israel’s “only official language”.

In fact, a careful reading of the party’s constitution and the text of the Nation-State law  reveals astounding similarities. This suggests that since the days of Meir Kahane, it is Israeli society that has drawn closer to the views of Jewish extremists, not the other way around.

Indeed, Kahane was assassinated in 1990, but his ideas lived on, expanding along with Jewish settlements to finally capture mainstream imagination. The outrage against the Netanyahu-Otzma Yehudit alliance is likely motivated by a slight degree of fear that the ugly face of Zionism has been fully exposed to the world.

As for AIPAC, it is clear that no amount of carefully-worded diplomatic language will suffice to explain why the Israeli government is to be populated by members of a party that has beenlisted as a terrorist organization by the US State Department since 1994.

Netanyahu is desperate, and, as history has taught us, when the Israeli Prime Minister is in a political jam, he would stoop to any level to free himself. In the last general elections in 2015, Netanyahu made a final appeal to his supporters. “Arab voters are heading to the polling stations in droves,” he said, resorting to his typical style of fear-mongering. Unsurprisingly, he won.

Netanyahu is more desperate now than ever. His opponents in the Center are merging their parties in a new list, Kahol Lavan or “Blue and White”, which has the potential to unseat him on April 9.

Worse, the Israeli attorney general has resolved on February 28 toindict Netanyahu for “bribery and fraud”. A poll published the following day found that two-thirds of Israelis think that Netanyahu should resign if indicted.

Netanyahu’s own opportunistic legacy is more than enough to explain his decision to reach out to Otzma Yehudit, but what is truly mind-boggling is the outrage at a political move that seems perfectly fit for Israel’s mainstream politics.

Even if Israel’s Central Election Committee resolves to bar Otzma Yehudit from participating in the upcoming elections, little will change in terms of the values and ideals the party stands for, principles that, in one way or another, also define Jewish Home, the New Right, the Likud and others.

Otzma Yehudit’s platform calls for a war against the “enemies of Israel” that must “be total, without negotiations, without concessions and without compromises”.

But isn’t this essentially the same view of Ayelet Shaked, Minister of Justice in Netanyahu’s coalition, and now one of the leaders of the newly formed “New Right” party?

In 2014, just before Israel unleashed its most destructive war on the besieged Gaza Strip, Shaked declared the need for a total war. “Not an operation, not a slow-moving one, not low-intensity, not controlled escalation … This is a war … This is a war between two people. Who is the enemy? The Palestinian people …”

More than 2,139 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed in the Israeli war that followed her declaration, and over 11,000 were wounded.

Why the outrage, then, when the fringe party’s mission to “restore the sovereignty and ownership over the Temple Mount” – meaning, Al-Aqsa Mosque – is consistent with the views of most Israelis, religious and secular alike? Knesset members have made that call repeatedly, often from Al-Aqsa itself, while surrounded by scores of soldiers and armed Jewish settlers.

As for the confiscation of Palestinian land and the expansion of illegal Jewish settlements, as Otzma Yehudit advocates, that, too, is a common ideal that most Israeli political groups, spanning the Right and Left, brazenly champion.

AIPAC is not only being hypocritical to suggest that Otzma Yehudit violates the “core values that are the very foundation of the State of Israel”, it is being purposely deceptive as well.

In fact, Otzma Yehudit’s platform only reinforces the existing “core values” of Israel, the same values that AIPAC itself champions without the slightest regard for human rights, international law and the principles of true democratic values.

Zionism and Anti-Semitism: Argument / Counter-Argument

A Lack of Originality

One thing that characterizes dogmatists is a lack of originality. You buy into the dogma and that’s it. Your worldview is complete—and so are your rationalizations, defensive pronouncements and complaints.

I have been an opponent of the Zionist dogma for almost fifty years (wow!) because it (1) denies Palestinians their civil and communal rights; (2) corrupts many Jews with a siren song of racially based nationalism; (3) undermines the concepts of international law and human rights and (4) seduces the U.S. government into supporting Zionist ethnic nationalist ambitions.

During the last twenty years I have noticed that the arguments used by the Zionists to defend their policies and practices have been quite consistent. This can’t be because they are convincing, since they are clearly losing the battle for public opinion. It may be that being a dogmatist simply robs you of any originality and flexibility.

Recently I was again struck by this consistency when I read a brief piece published on 12 December 2018 in the New York Times (NYT) by David Harris, chief executive officer of American Jewish Committee. The piece, entitled “Why Anti-Zionism Is Malign” (“malign” here meaning malevolent) was written in reaction to an earlier (7 December 2018) NYT editorial column by Michelle Goldberg entitled “Anti-Zionism Is Not Anti-Semitism”.

The Harris piece lays out some of the basic Zionist arguments in defense of Israel and their complaints about opposition positions. That being so, I thought it presented a good opportunity to briefly run through these points and, not for the first time or the last, debunk each in turn. So here goes.

Arguments and Counter-Arguments

Argument One: Anti-Zionists are really anti-Semites.

For anyone with an accurate historical view of anti-Zionism and an accurate definition of historical anti-Semitism, Harris’s assertion is hard to understand. From the historical perspective it is comparing apples and oranges. The only way to merge the two is by realigning reality.

Zionism is a political dogma that insists on an exclusively Jewish state in Palestine. It operates like a political party line.  Anti-Semitism is the age-old prejudice against Jews as Jews. The way the Zionists attempt to realign the world so that the two different concepts merge is by making the false claim that the State of Israel represents every Jew on the planet. If you buy into that claim, it seems to follow that anyone who is critical of Israel must also be critical of Jews per se.

In her December 7 column Michelle Goldberg called this proposition into question when she noted that “There’s a long history of Jewish anti-Zionism or non-Zionism, both secular and religious,” and this testifies to the fact that “it’s entirely possible to oppose Jewish ethno-nationalism without being a bigot.” Harris and his “committee” claimed to be “outraged” by this fact-based claim.

And what are we to make of the following point, also noted by Ms. Goldberg? If many Jews do not support Zionism or Israel, there are a number of anti-Semites who do. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is courting them as potential allies.The case may be that to take up the cause of ethnic nationalism you have to be a bigot.

Argument Two: “To deny the Jewish people, of all the peoples on earth, the right to self-determination surely is discriminatory.”

One big problem here: many anti-Zionists do not actually deny Jews of the “right of self-determination.” What they really stipulate is that the Jews (or any other people) should not realize self-determination through racist policies, that in this case, deny another people (the Palestinians) of self-determination.This is one of the Zionists’ moral blindspots—the inability to see, or care about, the real consequences of their actions and ends. The use of the phrase “of all peoples on earth” implies a sense of exceptionalism that (as in so many other cases past and present) excuses all manner of crimes through the process of special pleading.

Argument Three: “To single out Israel, the only liberal democracy in the Middle East, for demonization and isolation, while ignoring egregious human rights violators aplenty, once again smacks of anti-Jewish hatred.”

There are three parts to this claim: (1) that Israel is “the only liberal democracy in the Middle East”; (2) that it is being singled out for demonization and isolation while others are ignored; and (3) this process must be an expression of “anti-Jewish hatred”. Basically, there is a lot of whining going on here.

Alas, Israel is not a liberal democracy. It has always been the case that its ideologically driven aim is to give full political and civil rights to Israeli Jews only, and to this end it has used democratic facades to hide the truth. As a consequence, Israel has worked itself into an apartheid state status—an apartheid is a crime against humanity under international law.

The belated realization of this fact by “liberal Zionists” has created a lot of angst. If liberal Jews are increasingly alienated by Israeli behavior, just how liberal can that country be?

As to the use of the term “demonization”: it simply does not apply. The bases for criticizing Israel are drawn from the standards of International law and the universal declaration of human rights. There is no wild mud slinging here. The charges of Israeli racism are fact based.

To complain that those critical of Israel aren’t equally critical of others reminds one of the little kid who, when caught being really bad says, ‘Hey, what about those other guys’? As if catching him in the act, while not simultaneously chasing after others, somehow taints the accusation that the kid is a delinquent.

There is also the fact that if anti-Zionists appear to treat Israel differently, it is because the Zionist state has earned its special place of blame. How so? Agents of the Zionist state have worked for decades, and all too successfully, to arrange U.S. and other Western support of racist and illegal expansionist Israeli policies and practices. As Michelle Goldberg again suggests, the result is the corruption of “fundamental American [and other Western] values” and, one might add, the waste of billions of dollars in tax-payer money. That being the case, the Zionists deserve “special scrutiny”.

Argument Four: The Israelis have always wanted peace. However, their “efforts to forge a peace deal with the Palestinians” have been “spurned time and again” for over 70 years.”

This is an ideologically skewed version of the “peace process.” It is, of course, true that both parties have made repeated peace proposals. However, those made by Israel would have always resulted in an unsustainable Palestinian mini-state, essentially disarmed, economically under the thumb of Israel, and open to incursions by its powerful and paranoid neighbor. This might appear to Zionists such as David Harris as a good faith effort at peace—his questionable view of reality could make it seem that way—but no Palestinian could agree to what would be a surrender of their national rights.

Conclusion

Zionist presentations of their case, at least to the general public, almost always come in the form of knee-jerk reactions to various forms of criticism. This was certainly the case of David Harris’s presentation, written out of “outrage” at the rather mild criticism of Zionist positions offered by Michelle Goldberg (herself Jewish).

Harris offers no new ideas, no compromises, and certainly no mea culpas. Under the circumstances the confused and uncertain reader might approach the seeming impasse of argument and counter-argument this way: it is perhaps not an issue of what is “real.” Dogmatists of every sort have a hard time assessing objective reality. It is more a question of what sort of a world do we want to be “real”? Are the notions of international law and human rights a better or worst basis for our world than ethnocentric nationalism and religious exclusivity? We know the Zionist answer to this question and just how sensitive they are to any challenges. What then is your preference?

இஸ்ரேல் என்ற நாட்டை ஸ்தாபிப்தற்கு பலஸ்தீனத்தை பலிகொடுக்கும் தீர்மானம் ஐ.நாவில் நிறைவேறிய நாள் 29 நவம்பர் 1947நீதி சிதைக்கப்பட்டதும் அநியாயம் தலை எடுத்ததும் பின்னர் நிரூபிக்கப்பட்டது

மனித வரலாற்றில் மிகவும் இருள் சூழ்ந்த தினமாக 29 நவம்பர் 1947 பதிவாகியுள்ளது. அன்றைய நாளில் தான் அமெரிக்காவின் அப்போதைய ஜனாதிபதி ஹரி.எஸ்.ட்ரியுமன் தலைமையில் வழிநடத்தப்பட்ட ஐரோப்பிய ஏகாதிபத்தியவாத தலைவர்கள் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையை மிரட்டிப் பணிய வைத்து உலகின் பல இடங்களில் நாடோடிகளாக வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்த யூதர்களுக்காக அவர்கள் அதுவரை கண்டு கூட இருக்காத பலஸ்தீனம் என்ற நாட்டை பலஸ்தீன மக்களிடம் இருந்து காவு கொண்டு இஸ்ரேல் என்ற நாட்டை உருவாக்கும் தீர்மானத்தை நிறைவேற்றினர். இன்று அந்த நாடுதான் உலகின் எல்லா சாபக்கேடுகளுக்கும் அழிவுகளுக்கும் காரணமாக அமைந்துள்ளது.

ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சாசனத்தை மட்டுமன்றி உலகில் அறியப்பட்டிருந்த ஏனைய சட்டங்கள், தர்மங்கள், தார்மீக விழுமியங்கள் மற்றும் கொள்கைகள் என எல்லாவற்றையும் குழி தோண்டிப் புதைத்து விட்டுத் தான் இந்தத் தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டது. அன்றைய தினத்தில் தான் மனித விழுமியங்கள் அனைத்துமே சிதைவுற்றன.

இதன் மூலம் பலஸ்தீனர்களின் தாயகபூமி யூதக் குடியேற்ற வன்முறையாளர்களுக்கு தாரைவார்த்து கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. முஸ்லிம்கள் செல்வத்தோடும் செல்வாக்கோடும் வாழ்ந்த மத்திய கிழக்கை நிலை குலையச் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற பிரிட்டிஷ் அரசாங்க சதி முயற்சியின் இறுதி அத்தியாயம் எழுதப்பட்ட நாள் இன்றுதான். இஸ்ரேல் ஸ்தாபிக்கப்பட்ட பின் இடம்பெற்ற படுகொலைகள், யுத்தங்கள், இனச் சுத்திகரிப்புக்கள் எல்லாமே பிற்காலத்தில் மத்திய கிழக்கை கொலைகளமாகவும், சவக்காடாகவும் மாற்றிமையை வரலாற்றில் காண முடிகின்றது.

நடந்தது இதுதான்:

19ம் நூற்றாண்டின் ஆரம்பத்தில் இப்போது இஸ்ரேலாக இருக்கின்ற பலஸ்தீனம் துருக்கிய பேரரசின் ஒரு பகுதியாக இருந்தது. 1896ம் ஆண்டு காலப்பகுதியில் இங்கு வாழ்ந்த மக்களுள் 95 வீதமானவர்கள் அரபிகள். இங்கிருந்த காணிகளில் 90 வீதம் இவர்களுக்குச் சொந்தமானதாகவே காணப்பட்டன. இங்குள்ள மக்கள் சத்தமிட்டு பேசுவதையோ அல்லது கெட்ட விடயங்கள் பற்றி பேசுவதையோ கேட்பது கூட கடினம். அந்தளவுக்கு அமைதியாகவும் கௌரவமாகவும் மக்கள் வாழ்ந்த காலம் அது.

1897 இல் சுவிட்ஸர்லாந்தின் பேஸில் நகரில் இடம்பெற்ற முதலாவது உலக சியோனிஸ காங்கிரஸ் மாநாட்டில் பலஸ்தீனத்தில் யூத நாடு ஒன்றை உருவாக்க வேண்டும் என்ற தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டது. பத்து வருடங்கள் கழித்து 1907ல் லண்டன் காலணித்துவ மாநாட்டில் மத்திய கிழக்கை கொந்தளிப்பு நிலையில் வைத்திருக்கக் கூடிய விரோதப் போக்குடைய ஒரு சக்தியை ஸ்தாபிப்பது என்று தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டது.

இந்த சதித் திட்டம் தான் சியோனிஸ யூதர்களையும் பிரிட்டனையும் ஒன்றிணைத்தது. முதலாம் உலகப் போர் இதற்கான வாய்ப்பை அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கியது. இதன் படி முதலாம் உலகப் போரில் இவ்விரண்டு தீய சக்திகளும் ஒன்றிணைந்து துருக்கிப் பேரரசுக்கு முடிவு கட்டின. ஏற்கனவே திட்டமிட்டபடி 1917ல் பிரிட்டனின் ஆதிக்கத்தின் கீழ் பலஸ்தீனம் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டது. இது இந்தப் பிரதேசத்தில் யூதக் குடியேற்றத்துக்கு வழிவகுத்தது. குறிப்பாக இங்கு பலஸ்தீனர்கள் அடித்து விரட்டப்பட்ட பின் ரஷ்யாவில் வாழ்ந்து வந்த யூதர்கள் குடியேற்றப்பட்டனர்.

பிரிட்டனினதும் சியோனிஸ யூதர்களினதும் சூழ்ச்சி பற்றி எதுவும் அறிந்திராத அப்பாவி பலஸ்தீனர்கள் நிராயுதபாணிகளாக இவர்களை எதிர்த்தனர். ஆனால் ஏற்கனவே இந்த எதிர்ப்பை எதிர்ப்பார்த்திருந்த குடியேற்ற யூதர்கள் ஹகானா, ஸ்டேர்ன், இர்குன், ஸ்வாய்லுமி போன்ற பயங்கரவாத குழுக்களை மத்திய கிழக்கு பயங்கர வாதத்தின் ஞானத் தந்தைகளான மெனாச்சம் பெகின், இட்ஷாக் ஷாமிர், ஏரியல் ஷரோன் ஆகியோர் தலைமையில் உருவாக்கி பலஸ்தீனர்களுக்கு பதிலடி கொடுத்தனர். இந்தக் குழுக்கள் பலஸ்தீனர்களை கிராமம் கிராமமாகச் சென்று தேடித்தேடி வேட்டையாடின.

பலஸ்தீன மக்கள் மீது பயங்கரவாதத்தை பிரயோகித்து அவர்களை அங்கிருந்து விரட்டியடித்து அவர்களின் காணிகளை கபளீகரம் செய்வதை குறியாகக் கொண்டு இந்தக் குழுக்கள் செயற்பட்டன.

இந்த சதியின் ஒரு அங்கமாக மெனாச்சம் பெகின் தலைமையிலான குழு சிறுவர் பெண்கள் என்ற பேதம் கூட பார்க்காமல் நூற்றுக்கணக்கான பலஸ்தீனர்களை கொன்று குவித்தது. ஜெரூஸலத்தில் இருந்து ஒரு சில மைல் தூரத்தில் உள்ள டேர் யாஸின் என்ற கிராமத்தில் மட்டும் இந்தக் குழு 254 பலஸ்தீன உயிர்களைப் பலி எடுத்தது. இந்தக் குழுவுக்கு தலைமை தாங்கிய மெனாச்சம் பெகின் பின்னர் இஸ்ரேலின் பிரதமரானார். அவருக்கு சமாதானத்துக்கான நோபள் பரிசு வழங்கப்பட்ட கேவலமும் வரலாறில் பதிவாகியுள்ளது. டேர் யாஸின் படுகொலைகள் மனித குல வரலாற்றில் இடம் பெற்ற மிக மோசமான படுகொலைகளாகப் பதிவாகியுள்ளன. வியட்நாமில் இடம்பெற்ற ‘மைலாய் படுகொலைகளுக்கு’ ஈடான ஒரு சம்பவமாகவும் இது குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

எந்த விதமான உதவிகளும் அற்ற பலஸ்தீனர்கள் ஆர்ப்பாட்டங்கள் செய்து இதை எதிர்த்து நின்றனர். ஆனால் பிரிட்டிஷ் நிர்வாகம் இந்தப் பிரதேசத்தில் தனக்கிருந்த ஆணை அதிகாரங்களைப் பயன்படுத்தி அவர்களை நசுக்கியது. அதையும் மீறி இந்த எதிர்ப்புக்கள் மோசமான கட்டத்துக்கு வந்த போது இந்தப் பிரதேசத்தில் இருந்த தனக்கு விசுவாசமான அரபு கைக்கூலி ஆட்சியாளர்களையும், இராணுவ சர்வாதிகார ஆட்சியாளர்களையும் பிரிட்டன் தூண்டிவிட்டது.

அச்சம் கொண்ட பலஸ்தீனர்கள் தமது உயிரைக் காப்பாற்ற ஓட்டம் பிடித்தனர். அந்த ஓட்டம் அண்டை நாடுகளில் உள்ள அகதி முகாம்களில் அவர்களை கொண்டு போய் சேர்த்தது. இன்னமும் அத்தகைய அகதி முகாம்களில் அவல வாழ்வு நீடிக்கின்றது. போதுமான அளவு யூதக் குடியேற்ற வாசிகள் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டதும் சியோனிஸ்ட்டுகள் பலஸ்தீனத்தைப் பிரிப்பதற்கு ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையின் அங்கீகாரத்தை பெறும் காரியங்களைத் தொடங்கினர். தங்களுக்காக இந்த அசிங்கத்தை அரங்கேற்றத் தான் அவர்கள் அமெரிக்காவைப் பயன்படுத்தினர்.

அன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் கருத்தியல் ரீதியாகப் பிளவுபட்டிருந்த அமெரிக்காவும் சோவியத் யூனியனும் பலஸ்தீனத்துக்குள் சியோனிஸ நாட்டை உருவாக்கும் இந்த அசிங்கமான காரியத்தில் காலம் காலமாக கைகோர்த்து பணியாற்றும் படைகளைப் போல்; ஒன்றிணைந்தன. அன்றைய உலகை ஆட்டிப் படைத்த இரண்டு பெரிய வல்லரசுகளையும் சியோனிஸ்ட்டுகள் எந்தளவுக்கு தமது கட்டுப்பாட்டின் கீழ் வைத்திருந்தனர் என்பதற்கு இது ஒரு எடுத்துக் காட்டாகும்.

இவ்வாறாக 1947 நவம்பர் 29ல் பலஸ்தீனத்தை பிரித்து குடியேற்ற யூதர்களுக்கான பாஸிஸவாத நாட்டை உருவாக்கும் தீர்மானத்தை நிறைவேற்ற ஐ.நா.வை அடி பணிய வைத்தனர்.

வெளிநாடுகளைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு குழுவினருக்கு தாம் வாழ வந்த பகுதியில் ஒரு தேசத்தின் ஆள்புல ஒருமைப்பாட்டை பிரித்து சூறையாட அனுமதியளிக்கப்பட்டது உலக வரலாற்றில் இதுவே முதற் தடவையாகும்.

இந்த உத்தேச யூத நாட்டில் கூட அரபிகள் தான் பெரும்பான்மையாகக் காணப்பட்டனர். மொத்த சனத்தொகையான 1இ008இ900 ல் அரபு யூதர்கள் 509,780 ஆகவும் மற்றவர்கள் 499,020 ஆகவும் காணப்பட்டனர்.

தமது நாடு பிளவு படுத்தப்படும் ஐ.நா.தீர்மானத்தை பலஸ்தீன அரபிகள் எதிர்த்தனர். தமது தாய்நாடு இரண்டாக துண்டாடப்படுவதை அவர்கள் விரும்பவில்லை. மன்னன் சாலமன் காலத்தில் இடம்பெற்றதாகக் கூறப்படும் விவிலிய வேதநூல் கதையில் எப்படி ஒரு பிள்ளை இரண்டாகத் துண்டாடப்பட்டு இருவரிடம் கொடுக்கப்படுவதை விட அது மற்றவரிடமே இருக்கட்டும் என்று விட்டுக் கொடுத்து தனது தாய்மையை ஒரு பெண் எப்படி நிரூபித்தாலோ அதேபோன்ற நிலையில் தான் பலஸ்தீனர்கள் காணப்பட்டனர். ஆனால்; துரதிஷ்டவசமாக இந்த இடத்தில் நியாயம் வழங்க வேண்டியவர்கள் மன்னன் சாலமனைப் போல் விவேகமானவர்களாகக் காணப்படவில்லை. மாறாக அமெரிக்கா மற்றும் ஐரோப்பிய ஆதிக்கம் மிக்க உலகில் அவர்களின் சதித்திட்டங்களை எல்லாம் நியாயப்படுத்தி வந்த ஐ.நா சபைதான் இங்கு தீர்ப்பு சொல்லும் நிலையில் இருந்தது.

ஐ.நா மேற்கொண்ட இந்த அநீதியான முடிவு பற்றி பிரபல எழுத்தாளரும் வரலாற்றியலாளருமான எச்.ஜி.வெல்ஸ் குறிப்பிடுகையில் “இரண்டாயிரம் வருடங்களாக உலகில் இல்லாத ஒரு யூத நாட்டை உருவாக்குவது முறையெனில், ஏன் இன்னும் இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் பின் சென்று கனானிய காலத்து நாடு ஒன்றை உருவாக்கி இருக்கக் கூடாது. யூதர்களைப் போலன்றி கனானியர்கள் இன்னமும் உள்ளனர்” என்று குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

இந்த பிரிவினைவாத தீர்மானத்தால் துணிச்சல் கொண்ட சியோனிஸ்ட்டுகள் பலஸ்தீனர்களுக்கு எதிராக பல படுகொலைகளை தொடராகப் புரிந்துள்ளனர். இந்த யூத பயங்கரவாத குழுக்களுக்கு எப்போதெல்லாம் ஆயுதங்கள் தேவைப்பட்டதோ அப்போதெல்லாம் அதை அமெரிக்கா தாராளமாக அள்ளி வழங்கியது. இப்போதும் அது தொடருகின்றது.

சியோனிஸ படு கொலைகளுக்கு நடுவே 1948 மே 14ல் இஸ்ரேல் என்ற நாடு பிரகடனப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. ஐ.நா தீர்மானத்தை தொடர்ந்து மேலும் பெருமளவான பகுதிகள் இஸ்ரேலுடன் இணைக்கப்பட்டன.

முன் கூட்டியே திட்டமிடப்பட்டவாறு இஸ்ரேல் என்ற நாடு ஸ்தாபிக்கப்பட்டது. உலகின் மிகவும் கொடுமையான ஒரு சக்தியாக இஸ்ரேல் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சாசனம், மனித உரிமைகள் பற்றிய சர்வதேச சாசனம் என எல்லாவற்றiயும் மீறி நிறைவேற்றப்பட்ட தீர்மானத்தின் அடிப்படையில் தான் இன்று இஸ்ரேல் அதன் இருப்புக்கான உரிமையையும் கோரி நிற்கின்றது. சியோனிஸ நாடு பிரகடனம் செய்யப்பட்டு 15 நிமிடங்களுக்குள் அமெரிக்காவும் அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து சோவியத் யூனியனும் இஸ்ரேலை அங்கீகரித்தன. இந்த இரண்டு நாடுகளுமே இஸ்ரேலின் உருவாக்கத்துக்கு மிக முக்கிய பங்களிப்பை வழங்கின என்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

நியாயமான சிந்தனைப் போக்குள்ள சகலரும் இந்த அநியாயத்தை பரவலாக எதிர்த்தனர், கண்டித்தனர். வுhந நேற லுழசம சுநஎநைற ழக டீழழமள என்ற நூலில் ஐ.எப்..ஸ்டோன் என்பவர் எழுதியுள்ள கட்டுரையில் “இந்த சியோனிஸ விடயத்தில் எளிமையான ஒரு நயவுரை காணப்படுகின்றது. 2000 வருட பழமையானவர்களுக்காக திடீரென உரிமை கோரல்கள் விடுக்கப்படுவதாயின் முழு உலகும் மீண்டும் ஒரு தடவை மறுசீரமைக்கப்பட வேண்டும். சியோனிஸம் அதன் ஆரம்பம் முதலே அதன் குறிக்கோள்களை நிறைவேற்றிக் கொள்ள அரபு உலகில பாரிய பேரரசு ஒன்றின்; ஒரு புறக்காவல் பிரிவாகவே செயற்பட விரும்பியுள்ளது. சியோனிஸ அரசு என்ற கருவை உருவாக்கிய தியடோர் ஹெர்ஸ்ல் முதலில் சுல்தான்களையே வெற்றி கொள்ள விரும்பினார்” என்று குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

இஸ்ரேல் அது உருவாக்கப்பட்டது முதல் அடுத்தடுத்த படு கொலைகளாலும், ஆக்கிரமிப்புக்களாலும் மத்திய கிழக்கை கொலை களமாக மாற்றியது. 1956ல் பிரிட்டன் மற்றும் பிரான்ஸ் என்பனவற்றுடன் இணைந்து இஸ்ரேல் எகிப்தை ஆக்கிரமி;த்தது. 1967ல் சினாய், காஸா, தென் லெபனான், மேற்கு கரை, கிழக்கு ஜெரூஸலம் மற்றும் கோலான் குன்று பிரதேசம் என்பனவற்றையும் இஸ்ரேல் தனதாக்கிக் கொண்டது. இந்த ஆக்கிரமிப்பு யுத்தங்கள் எல்லாமே அமெரிக்காவினதும், ஐரோப்பிய ஆதரவாளர்களினதும், கொடுங்கோல் அரபு சர்வாதிகாரிகளினதும் ஒத்துழைப்புடன் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டவைதான்.

பலஸ்தீனத்தில் அவர்கள் கால் பதித்தது முதல் 65க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பாரிய படுகொலைச் சம்பவங்களைப் புரிந்து ஆயிரக்கணக்கான அப்பாவி பலஸ்தீனர்களைக் கொன்று குவித்துள்ளனர். இதில் மிக அண்மைய சம்பவமாக 2014ல் ஜுலை மற்றும் ஆகஸ்ட் காலப்பகுதியில் காஸாவில் இடம்பெற்ற படுகொலைகளைக் குறிப்பிடலாம். இது கடந்த ஆறு வருட காலத்தில் இடம்பெற்ற மூன்றாவது பாரிய படுகொலைச் சம்பவமாகும். அரபு ஆட்சியாளர்கள் குருடர்களாகவும் ஊமைகளாகவும் இருந்து இதனை அனுமதித்துள்ளனர்.

1970ல் ஐ.நாவால் சியோனிஸம் ஒரு வகை இனவாதம் என பிரகடனம் செய்யப்பட்டது.

ஆக்கிரமிப்பு, படுகொலைகள், சட்டவீனம் என்பன இஸ்ரேல் வரலாற்றில் அன்றாட நிகழ்வுகள் ஆகிவிட்டன. குற்றச்செயல்களும் இரத்தக்கறைகளும் தான் அதன் வரலாற்றுப் பக்கத்தை நிரப்பியுள்ளன.

ஆக்கிரமிக்கப்பட்ட பலஸ்தீன பூமியில் உலகில் எந்தவொரு பாகத்தில் இருந்து வந்த யூதர்கள் வேண்டுமானாலும் குடியேறலாம் என்பதுதான் இன்றைய நிலை. ஆனால் இங்குள்ள வீடுகளின் சாவிகளும் காணிகளின் உரிமைப் பத்திரங்களும் பலஸ்தீனர்களிடம் இன்னமும் உள்ளன. ஆனால் அவர்களுக்கு இங்கே வருகை தர முடியாது. இஸ்ரேல் தான் உலகில் நிரந்தர எல்லைகள் அற்ற ஒரே நாடு. அது மட்டுமல்ல உலகிலேயே இங்கு மட்டும் தான் படுகொலைகளுக்கு தலைமை தாங்கியவர்களும், யுத்தக் குற்றம் புரிந்தவர்களும் மாறி மாறி பிரதமர்களாகவும் ஜனாதிபதிகளாகவும் தெரிவு செய்யப்படும் விந்தையும் நடக்கின்றது.

பலஸ்தீனர்கள் தொடர்ந்து கொல்லப்படுகின்றார்கள், காணிகள் தொடர்ந்து அபகரிக்கப்படுகின்றன, பிரத்தியேகமான யூதக் குடியேற்றங்கள் ஏற்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. பலஸ்தீனர்களின் வீடுகள் தகர்க்கப்படுகின்றன. அவர்களின் பண்ணைகளும் விவசாய நிலங்களும் வாழ்வாதாரங்களும் சிதைக்கப்படுகின்றன. சட்டவிரோத கைதுகளும் சித்திரவதைகளும் தொடருகின்றன. 11 ஆயிரத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட பலஸ்தீனர்கள் இஸ்ரேலிய சிறைகளில் அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். காஸா பிரதேசத்தின் மீது எகிப்திய சர்வாதிகார இராணுவ ஆட்சியாளர்களின் ஒத்துழைப்புடன் பல ஆண்டுகளாக பொருளாதார தடைகள் விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. எகிப்தில் மட்டும் 1.5 மில்லியன் பலஸ்தீனர்கள் நிர்க்கதி நிலையில் உள்ளனர். இவ்வாறு இஸ்ரேலின் மனித குலத்துக்கு எதிரான குற்றங்கள் தொடர்ந்த வண்ணமே உள்ளன.

ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையில் ஆகக் கூடுதலான தடவைகள் கண்டனத்துக்கு உள்ளான நாடு இஸ்ரேல் தான். இதுவரை அந்த நாட்டுக்கு எதிராக 120க்கும் மேற்பட்ட கண்டனத் தீர்மானங்கள் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன. மத்திய கிழக்கு பிராந்தியத்துக்கு மட்டும் அல்ல முழு உலகினதும் ஸ்திரப்பாட்டுக்கு அச்சுறுத்தலாக இருக்கும் ஒரே நாடு இஸ்ரேல்தான். அமெரிக்காவினதும் ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளினதும் ஆதரவு காரணமாக இஸ்ரேலுக்கு எதிராக எவ்வித நடவடிக்கையும் எடுக்க முடியாத கையாலாகாத நிலையில் ஐ.நாவும் உள்ளது.

மேற்கு உலகில் மட்டும் அன்றி முழு உலகிலும் அரசியல், பொருளாதாரம், நிதி, ஊடகம், களியாட்டம், மற்றும் உள்ள எல்லா துறைகளையும் ஆட்டிப் படைக்கும் ஒரு சக்தியாக இஸ்ரேல் மாறியுள்ளதால் நீதி வழங்க வேண்டிய எல்லா சர்வதேச ஜுரிமார்களும் வேறு கதியின்றி மௌனம் காத்து வருகின்றனர்.

பலஸ்தீனர்களுக்கு எதிராக அந்தப் பிராந்தியத்தில் புரியப்பட்ட மற்றும் புரியப்பட்டு வருகின்ற எல்லா குற்றங்களிலும் அமெரிக்கா மற்றும் ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளின் பங்களிப்பும் காணப்படுகின்றது. இதுதான் யதார்த்தம். ஆனால் அமெரிக்க நெருக்குதலுக்கு அடிபணிந்து அரபு ஆட்சியாளர்களும் அப்பாவி பலஸ்தீனர்களைக் கைவிட்டுள்ளமை தான் பெரிதும் வேதனைக்குரிய விடயமாகும். பல அபிவிருத்தி அடைந்து வரும் நாடுகளும் கூட பலஸ்தீனர்களை கைவிட்டு விட்டு அவசர அவசரமாக சியோனிஸத்தை தழுவி வருவதையும் அவதானிக்கக் கூடியதாக உள்ளது.

இன்றைய சூழலில் ஒரு சில லத்தீன் அமெரிக்க நாடுகளைத் தவிர பலஸ்தீனர்களுக்கு குரல் கொடுக்கக் கூடிய எவரும் உலகில் இல்லை. பலஸ்தீனர்கள் மேலைத்தேச ஊடகங்களால் பயங்கரவாதிகளாக முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்டுள்ளனர். தமது பதவிகளையும், மக்களிடம் இருந்து கொள்ளையடிக்கப்பட்ட சொத்துக்களையும், அனுபவித்து வரும் வசதிகளையும் காப்பாற்றிக் கொள்ள அரபு ஆட்சியாளர்கள் பலஸ்தீனர்களை ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக அடகு வைத்துள்ளனர் அல்லது விற்பனை செய்து விட்டனர். இலட்சக்கணக்கான அப்பாவி முஸ்லிம்களை அடித்து துரத்தி அகதி முகாம்களுக்குள் தஞ்சமடைய வைத்துள்ள அமெரிக்கா, பிரிட்டன் மற்றும் ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகள், இஸ்ரேல் என்பன இணைந்து உருவாக்கியுள்ள இன்றைய மத்திய கிழக்கு இதுதான். (முற்றும்)

Legitimate criticism of Israel is not anti-Semitism

When Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset, in the wee hours of July 19 passed a controversial law, declaring that Israel was exclusively a Jewish state, the passage of the bill made headlines but failed to generate much worldwide condemnation.

In any other democracy, including the United States, a bid to enact similar legislation will draw widespread denunciation. The new Israeli law undermines human dignity and upholds the superiority of Jewish citizens over its other citizens. It has been given the enshrined status of a Basic Law, underlying the principles of the State. Therefore, it cannot easily be repealed. The new law recognises “Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people” and reduces its Arab and Druze people to second class citizens.

Imagine if Sri Lanka’s parliament passes a law stating that Sri Lanka is exclusively a country for the Sinhala Buddhists. Within minutes, international condemnations will pour in. The United States and the European Union will withdraw trade concessions and warn of tough measures if the government fails to reverse the law. Sanctions will be slapped. Sri Lanka will be overnight reduced to a pariah state.

But Israel is often treated with kid gloves and allowed to get away scot free. It can kill a thousand unarmed Palestinians in one go and still strut about on the world stage, with the US patting it on the back and hailing it as ‘the only democracy in the Middle East’. When the abominable law was passed, there was not even a whimper of protest from the Donald Trump administration. Perhaps, Israel was emboldened by Trump’s move to recognise the whole of Jerusalem as the undisputed capital of Israel – a move that killed Palestinian peace hopes.

Expressing concern, the European Union issued a weak statement that hardly stood up to the depravity of the racist law. Much weaker was the statement the United Nations Secretary General’s office issued. "We reaffirm the United Nations' respect for the sovereignty of states to define their constitutional character while emphasizing the need for all states to adhere to universal human rights principles, including the protection of minority rights," said UNSG’s spokesman Farhan Haq.

The passage of the bill, on the contrary, warrants international isolation of Israel – just as South Africa had been during the apartheid years -- and the reintroduction of the 1975 United Nations General Assembly Resolution which asserted that Zionism was a form of racism. The resolution had the support of the Non-Aligned Movement. In December 1991, with the Cold War coming to an end, the resolution was revoked, under pressure from and in awe of the US, which was emerging as the sole superpower or, sadly, as the global bully,
unchallenged by any rival.

Israel’s Arabs and the Druze communities have challenged the law in the Israeli Supreme Court, but Zionist hardliners, including Premier Benjamin Netanyahu and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, have warned of an earthquake if the courts were to uphold the petitions.

Against this backdrop, a major controversy has erupted in the British Labour Party, with party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has spoken in support of the Palestinians’ freedom cause, being slapped the anti-Semite label.

Corbyn’s problems began in April 2016 when Labour MP Naz Shah criticised Israel on social media posts and endorsed a suggestion that Israel be sent to the US. This was followed by former London mayor Ken Livingstone’s defence of Shah during a radio show. He added to the controversy by saying Hitler supported Zionism. He later resigned from the Labour Party, following his suspension.

These incidents and criticism of Israeli by several Labour activists saw Corbyn being accused of incompetence in dealing with anti-Semitism. In March this year, Jewish community leaders published an open letter accusing him of “siding with anti-Semites”. Although Corbyn had clarified matters saying he did not and would not support anti-Semitism, he remains vilified in the rightwing media. This is mainly because, Corbyn, in the true spirit of the traditional Labour, has been supporting the Palestinian cause, opposing Britain’s urge to bomb Syria and, domestically, pushing for radical socialist reforms aimed at uplifting the living standards of the working class.

Last month, amidst growing criticism, the Labour Party accepted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism in a bid to put the controversy to rest once and for all, but rightly did not agree to a stipulation which said criticism of Israel could be deemed anti-Semitism. The Labour Party argued that legitimate criticism of Israel could not be anti-Semitic.

Despite this principled stance, a section of the party wants Corbyn ousted. They are the rightwing members – the so-called Blairites or supporters of former Prime Minister Tony Blair who lied to the British people to launch the illegal war on Iraq in 2003, and who as the international community’s Middle East peace envoy did nothing but making millions of dollars through his private consultancy business targeted at the region’s despots.

The huge storm the criticism of Israel has created in British politics and the mild condemnations Israel’s apartheid law has evoked only underline the double standards the world has adopted in eliminating racism. The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination reaffirms in its preamble that discrimination between human beings on the grounds of race, colour or ethnic origin is an obstacle to friendly and peaceful relations among nations and is capable of disturbing peace and security among peoples and the harmony of persons living side by side even within one and the same State.

In a related controversy, Britain’s former foreign minister Boris Johnson has drawn criticism from Prime Minister Theresa May and rights groups for saying that Muslim women who wear burqas or Niqab look like letter boxes or bank robbers. May, while scolding him, said women should be free to wear the burqa if they chose to do so.

But this appears to be a rare case of condemnation of Islamophobia defined as “dislike of or prejudice against Islam or Muslims”. Often, in the name of freedom of expression, any mockery of Islam and its prophet is allowed in the so-called liberal and enlightened West, where academics and researchers are still prevented from questioning the Zionists’ narration of the Holocaust or Israel’s right to rob the Palestinians’ land.

True, anti-Semitism is bad and needs to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The Holocaust is remembered not to allow Israel to oppress Palestinians and occupy their lands in violation of international law, but to prevent another Holocaust, irrespective of who the victims are. Sadly, the Palestinians are subjected to a subtle Holocaust, by Israel with the explicit support of the US.

If the strongest condemnation is reserved only in defence of Jewish dignity and is not forthcoming with similar vigour when other ethnic groups and religious communities are ridiculed and their dignity tarnished, then those who are issuing such condemnation are practising the worst form of racism.

In its long tortuous history, Europe has spawned many de-monic ideologies — colonialism, imperialism, na-tionalism, fascism, Nazism, and Zionism, to name just a few — but while most have been repudiated, at least theoretically, Zionism is venerated as a religion. Zionists masquerade it as a badge of honor. It would be difficult to find anyone calling himself a colonialist or imperialist these days, although there are plenty of countries peddling these ideologies under the guise of other labels (humanitarian intervention, the right to protect, etc). Nor would one find anyone openly proclaiming to be a fascist or a Nazi. Yet there are plenty of people who proudly claim to be Zionists. They come in all stripes: Jewish, Christian, Hindu, atheist and (yes) Muslim. It is important to clarify at the outset what Zionism, or to call it by its correct name, political Zionism, is not. Despite strenuous efforts by its proponents, Zionism has little or nothing to do with Judaism, the religion of millions of people. True, Zionist ideology was first propounded by people of Jewish background — Theodore Herzl, Ze’ev Jabotinsky et al. — but they were not religious at all. In fact, they considered Judaism as an impediment in their colonial enterprise. Herzl was a racist. He propounded the idea, in the wake of the Dreyfus affair in France (year 1894), that Jews could not assimilate in other, primarily Christian European societies; they needed a separate homeland of their own. Even before Herzl announced his racist idea at the first Zionist Conference in Basle, Switzerland (1897), most rabbis had condemned political Zionism. The Philadelphia Conference of November 3–6, 1869 adopted a resolution that stressed the radical opposition between the universalist principles of Judaism and those of political Zionism. So how did political Zionism, a racist colonial enterprise, succeed in establishing itself in the heartland of Islam despite strong opposition from leading rabbis and the indigenous population of Palestine? By the turn of the last century, British and French colonialists were busy instigating revolts in the Muslim East (aka the Middle East) by buying the loyalty of Arabian tribal chiefs to use them against the Ottoman Sultanate. The toxic brew of Western colonialism, Arabian nationalism, and political Zionism facilitated the imposition of the Zionist entity in Palestine through the infamous Balfour Declaration. On November 2, 1917, British Foreign Secretary Lord Arthur Balfour, in a letter to Baron Walter de Rothschild, outlined the British government’s favorable view of establishing “in Palestine a home for the Jewish people…” While Balfour stated, “nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine,” he deliberately ignored their political rights. That the overwhelming majority of inhabitants of Palestine were Muslims and Christians whose fundamental rights were being violated was of little consequence. In typical colonial style, Balfour promised the Palestinians’ land to European Zionist Jews. Unlike European racists that have a long and gory history of persecuting Jews and other minorities in their midst, Muslims have not perpetrated any pogroms or indulged in inquisitions against religious or other minorities. Whenever Jews suffered persecution in Europe or Russia, they found refuge among Muslims, hence the presence of Jewish communities in North Africa, Turkey, and Iran to this day. Yet European racists transferred their “Jewish problem” to Palestine. The tiny minority of Jews in Palestine — 7% in 1919 and even at the time of Israel’s creation in May 1948 through a scandalous vote in the United Nations General Assembly (November 1947) — the 30% Jewish population owned a mere 6.5% of the land. Yet it was given 56% of Palestinian territory. The rapid increase in Jewish population from 7% to 30% in 29 years (1919–1948) was not the result of natural growth; it was achieved through illegal Jewish immigration into Palestine. Even Hitler’s WWII bloodbath did not convince the overwhelming majority of Jewish people to settle in Palestine. But Zionist leaders missed no opportunity to emphasize the importance of Jewish migration to Palestine and lamented the lack of interest among European and North American Jews.

While Zionists denounce anti-Semitism and advance it as the principal justification for the creation of a separate homeland for the “Jewish people,” anti-Semitism is a twin of Zionism and needed for its survival. Herzl himself wrote, “The Jews constitute a single people and cannot be integrated into other peoples. But they do become assimilated by any society if they find themselves secure in it for a long period. And that will never be to our interest.” Thus, Herzl considered anti-Semites as indispensible allies in his quest to create the Zionist State in Palestine. Today’s Zionists are no less eager to align themselves with racists and bigots. In fact many Zionists, especially in the US, are leading Islamophobes. In Palestine, the Zionists have not only expropriated Palestinian land — today the Zionists control more than 93% of the original land of Palestine through theft, forcible occupation, and other illegal means — they have also built roads, neighborhoods, communities, and settlements reserved exclusively for theJews. This is what apartheid South Africa had done, hence the designation of Israel as an apartheid state. The apartheid wall through which the Zionists have cut off Palestinian families and villages, stealing in the process more Palestinian land, caps it all. In a ruling handed down in July 2004, the International Court of Justice described Israel’s apartheid wall as illegal. Zionists are also masters at forging history. From the biblical claims that “God promised them this land” described as a “land without a people” (Palestinians are non-people in Zionist mythology), they have gone about uprooting Palestinian families from their homes and villages, often at gunpoint and frequently using it as well, to indulging in mass starvation and killings. By using the Bible as a real estate manual, ironically by people that do not even believe in God, the Zionists have added the myth of selective history to their spurious claims to Palestine. They claim that they have a historic link with Palestine because Prophets David and Solomon (a) ruled the Holy Land 3,000 years ago. It is as if in Zionist mythology, nobody existed before the Hebrew tribes arrived in Palestine — not the Philistines (hence the name Palestinians), the Moabites, the Hittites, the Amorites, or others — and subsequent to the 73-year rule of David and Solomon nobody else inhabited this land until the Zionists arrived to inhabit it. The guilt-ridden Christian West that has historically perpetrated bloodbaths against the Jewish people accepted such infantile claims at face value. Nothing could be more spurious than the claim of Christian charity assuaging the guilt of European Christendom. Christian charity requires the good believer to give from what he has; nothing could be more un-Christian than to “give” stolen property to someone else. Similarly, nothing could be more personal than Christian morality, and so how is Christian dogma appropriated to govern the behavior of nation-states, which in reality wanted to solve the Jewish problem through expulsion? The fact is, Europe and the numerous squatter/colonial entities it spawned — America, Australia, New Zealand, to name a few — never stopped being racist; long before the Third Reich, the so-called “final solution” was discussed in Britain, and a thoroughly assimilated Jew, constrained most of the time to live in his own ghetto, was still not tolerable to the European racist. And so European racism set upon a course to solve two problems with one master stroke. Perceiving themselves to be locked in a life-and-death struggle with Islam, the real purpose of the creation of the Zionist State of Israel was to position a colonial beachhead in the heartland of Islam that would empty Europe of all its Jews and simultaneously act as a permanent impediment to peace and progress in the Muslim world. Israel admirers never tire of reminding the world that it is the “only democracy” in the Middle East. Hitler’s Third Reich was also a democracy yet it perpetrated the biggest bloodbath in European history. The Zionists are busy replicating the Nazis’ horrible record in the Holy Land. There are also a number of racist laws in force in Zionist Israel. One is the Law of Return. Under this law, any Jew living anywhere in the world is automatically entitled to Israeli citizenship upon setting foot there. That the overwhelming majority of Jewish people who occupy Palestine today have no links with the land whatsoever is of little consequence. Palestinians who have lived there for millennia, have to prove their ownership to land or property before they are given any rights. Their papers were often stolen or destroyed by the very Zionist marauders who invaded Palestinian villages and towns in 1947–1948. Tens of thousands of Palestinians were murdered and others driven out through a campaign of terror — and this was before 1948. This is even more critical for Palestinians in Jerusalem; if they are away from the city for more than three months, they lose the right of return. Similarly, every effort is made, fair and foul, to force them to leave. Palestinians are denied building permits not only for new homes but are also refused permission to rebuild. Palestinian home demolitions are a common practice of the Zionists to target Palestinians involved in resistance activity. Concurrent with this was the policy of land grab, the most important consideration after illegal Jewish immigration into Palestine. If a core group of Jewish settlers, the vanguard of the Zionist movement, did not occupy a core area of territory, the Zionist enterprise would not succeed. This is what the Israeli sociologist Baruch Kimmerling referred to as “territoriality” being at the centre of the Zionist project. At the time of Israel’s creation, the 30% Jewish/Zionist population owned only 6.5% of the land yet they grabbed 56% of the territory, quickly expanding it further through terror. Three instruments were particularly effective in this theft: the Jewish National Fund (set up in 1901), the Land Ordinance Act of 1943 and, the Emergency Laws decreed in 1945, the latter two courtesy of the British colonial occupation of Palestine. The first stipulated, in typical colonial style, that land acquired by it cannot be resold or even leased to non-Jews. The Land Ordinance Act was applied under the rubric of the “public interest” while under Emergency Law the military governor was given powers to suspend all the rights of citizens. The most convenient pretext used was that of “security” or by declaring certain areas “prohibited.” The Zionist occupiers of Palestine have all these repressive instruments to dispossess the indigenous Palestinian population. All this is done under the absurd and bogus claim that Jewish people are superior to Palestinians and they cannot live side by side with them as neighbors. How else should one describe racism? And regardless of what the cowardly Western rulers and their puppets say, Zionism is racism. What most people — and unfortunately the bulk of Muslims falls into this category as well — fail to recognise is that Israeli racism is integrally connected to the Israeli nation-state. Were it not for the state apparatus, the military, political, economic, and criminal resources required to pull off this grand deception and occupation of the Holy Land would not be possible. Zionism will never become a bitter historical memory unless its eradication is coupled with the dismemberment of the State of Israel and the thorough dezionisation of its Jewish inhabitants. However even this is not enough, as the tentacles of Zionism extend far beyond the borderless pariah State of Israel into the Arabian and imperialist capitals of the world. It is not enough to say that imperialist America and colonialist Europe prop up the Zionist cancer in the Muslim world. The Zionists would never have lasted a day without the willing 80-year complicity of Arabian despots, dictators, presidents, and princes from Morocco to the Persian Gulf. And we are witnessing this complicity explode into the open with the Arabians’ embrace of Zionist Israel. Thus the will to make Israel disappear into the pages of history must also be the will to look for an Islamic post-national alternative to the nation-state fiasco that currently grips the whole world. Were such a will to reassert itself into people-to-people associations across the world, then Jews would once again be free to settle anywhere in the Muslim world, not just in the walled-off military bunkers of Tel Aviv and Haifa. And this directional course has its starting point at the heart of the Arab world, indeed the entire Muslim world: Makkah. Jerusalem will never be free so long as its sister holy precincts in Makkah are not liberated from the crypto-Zionist clan of Saud and its people are not cleansed of their tribal-cum-nationalistic perversions acquired from the sons of Israel. This is the only way to eradicate Zionism — as ideology and as social construct. All partial solutions will land us in the same spot we are in today. Until this racist ideology is uprooted and eliminated utterly and irrevocably, there will be no peace in Palestine or anywhere else in the world.

West’s claims to leadership exposed in Durban

Being powerful is one thing — being powerful, respected and popular is entirely different and altogether more difficult. The US’s position as the dominant power in the world is now widely recognised, as is its freedom to do as it pleases, virtually anywhere in the world, with scant regard even for its Western allies, let alone anyone else. Equally clear is its ability to manipulate international institutions such as the UN to legitimise its actions, despite the principles that these institutions claim to uphold. Its insistence on maintaining genocidal economic sanctions and murderous military operations against Iraq is a case in point; another is its support for zionist expansionism in the heart of the Muslim world, along with all the repression and brutality that go with it.

Such power may appear impressive, yet its visibility is a sign of the West’s weakness. The most effective power is exercised discreetly, leaving its victims grateful rather than resentful. The West is well aware of this, hence its attempts to hide its true nature behind a facade of democracy, human rights, freedom and other fine-sounding principles, along with a massive public relations façade designed to dazzle the world with a portrayal of the West as a haven of everything good in life. The Western drive has been not only to dominate all societies, but also to make people believe that the West is a force for good in the world, while all the problems and evils must be someone else’s fault.

The West’s failure to achieve this was demonstrated at the UN World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Forms of Intolerance (WCAR) in Durban earlier this month. Such events are usually opportunities for the West to polish its credentials as a champion of the world’s masses. This time, the world’s resentment of US arrogance was such that Washington was glad of the excuse to withdraw early from the fray as a ‘matter of principle’ because its blood brother Israel was coming under sustained attack for zionism’s inherent racism, its oppression of the Palestinians, and its expansionism. Many observers recognised that this was mostly a fig-leaf to cover its desire to evade condemnation for the West’s enslavement of black Africans; fewer realised that this condemnation also extended to the West’s continuing economic exploitation of the non-Western world.

That this resentment was expressed largely by criticism of Israel is significant, however. Nowhere else in the world today is the West so brazenly involved in the dispossession, exploitation and repression of a non-Western people. What people see happening in Palestine now is what people all over the world recognise as having happened to themselves in the past, and which, in most cases, is still continuing in a different form. The US would not dare to take on an enemy so directly today; instead it uses proxies, many of them suborned members of subject peoples, to do its dirty work while it claims to champion human rights and democratic principles. Israel, however, is now recognised as the embodiment of every political evil that the West claims to abhor; the West’s unreserved support for it betrays its own true nature. The centrality of the Palestine issue in Durban was indicative of the extent to which the Palestinians’ resistance to Israel has come to symbolise anti-Westernism generally.

This anti-Western sentiment was initially generated not by governments, which are vulnerable to Western pressure, but by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) meeting in Durban before the conference proper; their success in defying the West made it easier for governments to do the same. Notably, these NGOs were both non-western and western; the fact that awareness of the nature of the West is growing even in the West is particularly worrying to the powers that be: hence their increasing repression of domestic opposition, such as the anti-globalization movement.

The West is a behemoth of immense power but, like all oppressors, it is creating the seeds of its own downfall. History can sometimes move very quickly; witness the collapse of communism barely a decade ago. One day soon, the West’s failure to win over the hearts and minds of world’s people, and its growing dependence on naked force to maintain its position, will be recognised as fatal weaknesses. Future historians may come to regard the uprising against zionism in Palestine in 2000-01, and the revolt against US hegemony at the UN conference in Durban in 2001, as key points in the West’s decline.
