The President of Iran’s Islamic Denomination University has called for Islamic unity to be treated as a strategic and foundational principle rather than a temporary or instrumental approach, stressing the role of universities in turning the concept into practical cooperation across the Muslim world.

Mohammad Hadi Fallah Zadeh, speaking at the 40th International Conference on Islamic Unity in Tehran, said unity should become embedded in society through academic research, education and public discourse, rather than relying solely on religious rulings or temporary emotional solidarity.
He highlighted the International University of Islamic Denominations as an important institution for promoting inter-sectarian understanding, saying its model of bringing students from different Islamic schools together in an educational ambiance helps foster mutual understanding and respect.
The scholar said Islamic unity should move from “intellectual unity” to “strategic and operational unity,” with scholars, academics, political leaders and other elites working together to address the major challenges facing the Muslim world.
Fallah Zadeh identified three key roles for universities: producing knowledge, educating and networking Islamic scholars and elites, and translating knowledge into policy and practical action.
He also called for stronger academic links between universities in Iran and institutions across the Muslim world to develop solutions to shared challenges.
The Iranian scholar stressed that such efforts must preserve academic independence, respect differences among Islamic schools of thought, and avoid sectarianism, excommunication and hate speech.
He said the ultimate goal should be to establish unity as a lasting social value and contribute to the development of a new Islamic civilization based on shared beliefs and values.
