According to lexicographers, a person who cannot differentiate between a friend and a foe completely lacks discernment or suffers from extreme naivety.
What, if such a person or group of persons are thrust to the political apex of a country!
The result would be obvious. The naïve and the knaves who infiltrate their ranks contribute to a weak economy, rampant corruption, cultural stagnation, political fragmentation, foreign exploitation, military aggression, territorial encroachment, and colonial enslavement.
Unfortunately, this is the sorry state of affairs in Lebanon, a Levantine state on the Mediterranean coast of West Asia, detached from Syria by the French colonialists in 1923 with the intention of creating a Christian entity for rule of the Maronite minority on the majority Muslims of that area.
France did not fully succeed in its designs – as crafty Britain did in 1948 by planting European Zionists in the heart of Palestine with the detested label of Israel – although Paris brainwashed a section of both Christians and Muslims to serve as agents of imperialism.
So pathetic has become the situation of Lebanon that democratic values do not govern the country, where the US ambassador in Beirut openly interferes in the formation of the government, distribution of cabinet posts, and selection of the prime minister and the president – both of whom have no demographic credibility.
In other words, neither the Maronite Christians – whose representative, as per the outdated constitution, is the president – nor the Sunni Muslims represented by the prime minister, together make up even half of the country’s population.
The largest single group in Lebanon that dwarfs both the group in terms of sheer numbers, totally 45 percent of population, finds itself sidelined with no say in executive matter and decision-making.
To be more precise, this section of the Lebanese population, whose numbers are ever increasing, is Shi’a Muslim. Its most prominent legal and legitimate representative is the legendry anti-terrorist movement, the Hezbollah, whose national loyalty is beyond an iota of doubt and whose courage and commitment has saved Lebanon from Israel’s occupation on many an occasion.
Sadly, the president and prime minister of Lebanon seem to suffer from extreme naivety because of their lack of discernment between friend and foe.
This is the reason the two have fallen prey to the US-Zionist propaganda to try to marginalize and disarm the Resistance Front even as Israel has made deep inroads into Lebanon bombing to rubble several towns, martyring thousands of men, women, and children, and displacing hundreds of thousands of other.
Yet, in a fit of craziness, President Joseph Aoun is raving and ranting that the Islamic Republic of Iran, not the US and Israel, is exploiting and destroying Lebanon.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, promptly replied: “Based on Mr. Aoun’s comments, one would think it is Iran that has occupied one-fifth of Lebanon, displaced one-quarter of the Lebanese people, and is bombing his country on a daily basis.”
