A MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE ON THE DAY OF ASHURA

By Professor Abdullahi Danladi
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Peace and blessings be upon our master Muhammad (S.A.W.A.), upon his purified household, and upon all those who follow the path of truth and justice until the Day of Judgment.
On this sorrowful day of Ashura, hearts across the world turn toward the plains of Karbala. Time itself seems to stand still as humanity remembers one of the most painful tragedies ever witnessed in the history of faith. Today is not merely the remembrance of a battle; it is the remembrance of a wound that has never truly healed. It is the remembrance of a grandson standing where no grandson should ever have stood, carrying the burden of preserving the religion of his grandfather at the cost of his own life, the lives of his loved ones, and the suffering of his family.
We offer our deepest condolences first and foremost to the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, whose beloved grandson was slaughtered on the banks of the Euphrates while deprived of water. We offer our condolences to Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Sayyidah Fatimah al-Zahra, whose son became the eternal symbol of sacrifice and resistance against oppression. We offer our condolences to the purified Ahlulbayt, whose tears and suffering transformed Karbala from a historical event into an everlasting moral compass for humanity.
How difficult it must have been for a grandfather who carried Husayn upon his shoulders, kissed him repeatedly before the companions, and declared his love for him before the Ummah, to witness the day when that same beloved child would lie upon the burning sands, surrounded by the bodies of his companions and family members. How painful it must have been for Fatimah al-Zahra (A.S.), whose heart had already endured the loss of her father, to see through divine knowledge the calamity that would one day befall her son. How heavy must have been the grief of Ali (A.S.), who had foretold Karbala long before it occurred, knowing that a day would come when the sword of injustice would be raised against the very embodiment of truth.
Yet Ashura is not merely a day of grief. It is also a day of testimony. The enemies possessed armies, wealth, palaces, and political authority. Husayn possessed conviction. The enemies commanded thousands of soldiers. Husayn stood with a handful of loyal companions. The enemies controlled the state. Husayn carried the truth. History has delivered its verdict. The palaces have vanished, the thrones have crumbled, the armies have turned to dust, yet the name of Husayn continues to illuminate hearts across generations.
Today, therefore, we do not merely mourn. We renew our covenant with the values for which Imam Husayn (A.S.) gave everything: justice over oppression, dignity over humiliation, truth over falsehood, and principle over power. We remember that Karbala teaches humanity that victory is not always measured by survival, and defeat is not always measured by death. Sometimes a man is killed, yet his message conquers history. Sometimes a ruler wins a battle, yet loses eternity.
O Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.A.), accept our humble condolences.
O Fatimah al-Zahra (A.S.), accept our tears.
O Amir al-Mu'minin Ali (A.S.), accept our grief.
O Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (A.S.), accept our loyalty.
May Allah's peace be upon Husayn, upon Ali ibn al-Husayn, upon the children of Husayn, upon the companions of Husayn, and upon all those who continue to stand with truth wherever and whenever it is challenged.
Peace be upon Husayn.
Peace be upon the martyrs of Karbala.
Peace be upon those who mourn Husayn with sincerity and understanding.
And peace be upon the oppressed wherever they may be.
Indeed, the tragedy of Karbala was not confined to a single day in history; it became a timeless call reminding humanity that truth may be wounded, but it can never be defeated.
