Sunni Cleric: Desecration of the Qur’an Is an Insult to Muslims Worldwide

The Sunni Friday prayer leader of Urmia stated that any act of desecration against the Holy Qur’an constitutes an insult to Muslims around the world, emphasizing that living by its verses means safeguarding its sanctity and defending Islamic symbols.

Mamad Kolsheinejad made the remarks during Friday prayers in Urmia, calling on worshippers to strengthen their God-consciousness and adhere to piety. He described piety as guarding oneself against sin and making use of every moment of life to draw closer to God.

Referring to the holy month of Ramadan as the month in which the Qur’an was revealed, he said the gates of divine mercy are opened to believers. The first and most important step during this blessed month, he added, is repentance and returning to God. Repentance, he noted, cleanses the heart from the stains of sin, citing Qur’anic teachings that urge believers to turn back to God in order to attain prosperity.

Kolsheinejad also quoted Ali ibn Abi Talib, who said, “Death seeks you while you are in heedlessness,” underscoring the importance of spiritual awareness before life comes to an end.

He further highlighted devotion to prayer and the Qur’an as another key benefit of Ramadan, referencing Surah Al-Ankabut, which states that prayer restrains believers from immorality and wrongdoing—provided it is performed with sincerity and reflection.

The cleric described supporting the needy as the third essential step during Ramadan, noting that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known for his generosity during the month and that charity carries multiplied rewards.

Expressing regret over what he described as repeated acts of desecration against Islamic sanctities, including the Holy Qur’an and the Divine Names, he said such actions reflect hostility toward the message of monotheism and the declaration “Allahu Akbar” and “La ilaha illa Allah.”

“The enemy fears these words,” he stated, “because they were the foundation of Islamic civilization. It was ‘Allahu Akbar’ that empowered the oppressed against arrogance, and ‘La ilaha illa Allah’ that transformed pre-Islamic Arabs into a unified Muslim community.”

He stressed that desecrating the Qur’an is undeniably an insult to all Muslims worldwide and condemned such acts as criminal. “Living with the verses of the Qur’an,” he said, “means preserving this sanctity and defending these sacred symbols.”

Addressing the role of mosques, Kolsheinejad emphasized that in Islam, a mosque is not merely a place of worship but a center of guidance, social reform, unity, education, and solidarity.

He also underscored the need to stand against tyranny and global arrogance, stating that the Qur’an instructs Muslims to maintain intellectual, ideological, and cultural independence and not allow domination over believers.

According to the cleric, contemporary challenges include what he described as “soft warfare,” cultural infiltration, and efforts to normalize relations with Israel, which he said aim to weaken Islamic identity.

Highlighting the importance of scientific advancement, he stated that Iranian scientists have demonstrated their capabilities through peaceful nuclear technology and its applications in medicine, agriculture, industry, and energy. He described such technological development as a legitimate international right of nations to manage their present and future.

Concluding his remarks, Kolsheinejad said that since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently advocated global peace and engagement based on mutual respect. He stressed that negotiations must be conducted from a position of dignity rather than weakness, adding that past experiences — including the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement — demonstrate that Washington cannot be fully trusted.
