
In an exclusive interview with IRNA on Wednesday, Junpyo discussed the potential for collaboration between Iran and South Korea, highlighting their complementary strengths. He noted that Seoul excels in advanced technologies and industrial capabilities, while Tehran possesses abundant natural resources, a skilled workforce, and a large market.
Referring to the long-standing economic relations between the two countries since the 1960s, he emphasized that recent regional and international developments have heightened the need for direct dialogue and the creation of a future roadmap, expressing hope that these discussions could lead to a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.
He further emphasized the pivotal role of cultural and public diplomacy in strengthening relations, saying, “I firmly believe that the essence of diplomacy is friendship and trust between people. Based on this, the embassy, by holding events such as taekwondo competitions, joint art exhibitions, and cultural workshops, as well as provincial travels for direct dialogue with people, seeks to strengthen these bonds.”
Sanctions reduced Tehran-Seoul economic cooperation, but cooperative potential remains
The South Korean ambassador to Iran said that although international sanctions have significantly reduced economic cooperation between the two countries, there remains strong potential for becoming ideal economic partners due to their complementary advantages.
Referring to the brilliant history of cooperation between the two countries that has brought trade volume to $17.4 billion, he emphasized that new fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy have created fresh opportunities for partnership.
Junpyo outlined his strategy as building trust through cultural and scientific exchanges and continuous dialogue with companies from both countries to prepare the groundwork for future cooperation, expressing hope that with the right conditions, the economic cooperation between the two countries would not only be restored but also surpass its previous level.
Peace, stability in the Middle East shared goal of Tehran, Seoul
Emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the Middle East for his country’s national and economic security, Junpyo announced that the two countries share this common goal. He pointed out that instability in the region directly impacts South Korea’s economy, which imports a significant portion of its energy from the Middle East.
The South Korean Ambassador highlighted his country’s practical actions in support of this goal, adding that South Korea has cooperated with the international community, providing $76 million in humanitarian aid to Gaza, and recently announced an additional $10 million in aid.
Referring to the close diplomatic cooperation between Iran and South Korea, including meetings between foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and the holding of a high-level policy consultation after seven years, he expressed hope that the embassy in Tehran, as a communication bridge, will continue to foster dialogue and constructive cooperation towards achieving a peaceful and stable Middle East.
