In an interview with IRNA on Wednesday, Pakaein highlighted Iran’s prioritization of relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan, noting that while there have been fluctuations in their ties, they are currently strong, reasonable, and growing. The exchange of visits by officials from both countries and the regular holding of joint economic commissions reflect Tehran and Baku’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, he added.
He described Araghchi’s trip as timely and strategically significant. “This trip will yield substantial achievements. Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan can have excellent relations, as it is rare to find two countries in the world that share such political, economic, and cultural similarities.”
The former ambassador further explained that Iran’s economic potential in trade, transit, and energy in relation to Azerbaijan offers promising areas for cooperation, including increasing joint oil investments, facilitating gas swaps to Nakhchivan, enhancing electricity transmission, and engaging in extraterritorial farming.
Pakaein said that Iran offers the shortest, most economical, and most reliable route for Azerbaijan, adding that these factors can significantly contribute to the reconstruction of some regions in Azerbaijan, including Karabakh.
He also described Azerbaijan’s closeness to the Israeli regime as Iran’s primary concern. “This issue has always been one of the topics of our negotiations with Azerbaijani friends, and Azerbaijani officials have always assured the Iranian government that they will not provide opportunities to other countries, including the Israeli regime, for security and military harassment against Iran.”
