US lawmakers concerned about safety of journalists in Gaza

Tehran, IRNA- More than two dozen Democratic lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have pressed the Biden administration to take concrete steps to protect journalists and uphold the freedom of the press in the Gaza Strip, where scores of media personnel have been killed in the Israeli military campaign so far.

American lawmakers expressed concern over the situation of journalists in a letter addressed to Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, according to Al Jazeera English.

With more journalists killed in three months than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year, we remain concerned that not enough steps have been taken to safeguard the lives of the civilian population in Gaza, including journalists,” the lawmakers wrote.

The letter which was endorsed by 25 House Democrats, including several senior lawmakers as well as one of just three Muslims in Congress, stressed that journalists should be allowed to do their jobs without interference.

Since the start of the Zionist regime's attacks on Gaza on October 7, more than 132 Palestinian journalists have been killed.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said the first 10 weeks of the regime’s genocide were the deadliest recorded ever for journalists, with most of them killed in a single year at one location.

The United Nations has already sounded a serious alarm about the high number of journalist fatalities in Israeli attacks on the besieged Palestinian territory.
