The following is a statement issued by the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Iran in Colombo

Assassination of Iran’s top scientist: Tehran vows to respond at proper time

The horrific assassination of Dr. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh Mahabadi, Iran’s top scientist, is a clear instance of state terrorism.

Martyr Fakhrizadeh was as a distinguished physicist and university professor, who carried out and contributed to various scientific initiatives for defensive purposes. Martyr Fakhrizadeh played an outstanding role in the development of the first indigenous COVID-19 Test Kit. It was his great contribution to our national efforts to curb the COVID-19 pandemic at a time when Iran is under the United States’ inhumane sanctions that is preventing us from accessing humanitarian goods, including medicines and medical equipment. He was also supervising the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Substantive evidence clearly indicates the involvement of Israel in the terrorist attack. Israeli authorities have repeatedly named Dr. Fakhrizadeh and planned to assassinate him several times. This is yet another instance of terrorism planned, organised and financed by Israel with the aim of endangering international peace and security, threatening territorial integrity of nations, destabilsing the region, violating human rights and hindering the socio-economic development of independent nations.

This obvious violation of international law should be firmly condemned by the international community as it seriously undermines regional and global efforts in bringing about peace and security.

The enemies of the Iranian nation, especially those who designed, perpetrated and supported this criminal act, should know that such malevolent acts will not undermine the Iranians’ will and determination to continue on their glorious and powerful path and that the murder of notable Iranian scientists such as Martyr Fakhrizadeh will not weaken the progress of the nation in various domains including science and innovation.

Iran stresses on its lawful rights to take all necessary measures to defend its people and secure its interests and would respond to this assassination at the proper time.
