Political Violence Further Divides American Society

The assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth movement, has shaken America. He has become a martyr, and his death has given rise to a powerful wave in favor of strengthening conservative Christian values in the lives of Americans.

Unfortunately, political violence has become a common practice in American society. According to a survey by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, 34% of college students recently stated that they support the use of violence in some circumstances to stop a campus speech. Since 2021, this figure has increased from 24%, and surveys among the elderly are also alarming.

Passionate political disputes are far from abating, and there is no consensus on many important issues in the country. Some media outlets admit that in recent years, Americans have lost some of their integrity and empathy, too often wishing harm to their political opponents by dehumanizing those with whom they disagree. Emotions are at their peak, more and more people are dissatisfied, communities are fragmented, traditional support systems are collapsing, people are isolated, and weapons are everywhere.

This polarization is also evident in other spheres, for example, on the matter of transgenders (it has been determined that Charlie Kirk’s murderer lived as a transgender).

Differences in approaches to US Middle East policy are becoming more apparent; Trump’s line of unconditional support for Israel is, to put it mildly, increasingly poorly received among American youth, especially against the background of daily reports of killings and destruction in the Gaza Strip.

A growing divide between conservatives and liberals

Charlie Kirk’s assassination remains at the center of the growing disagreement between conservatives and liberals.

On September 21, a memorial service for Charles Kirk was held at a 63,000-seat stadium in Arizona, with President Trump attending. At least 200,000 people came to honor the memory of the young political figure and influential conservative activist. Supporters of the Democratic Party fear that this ceremony could launch a powerful campaign against the liberals; even now, those who try to denigrate Kirk are being condemned and obstructed.

Kirk’s murder did not consolidate American society and rally it against political violence, but rather triggered an escalation of tensions in day-to-day American life

Trump, who called Kirk a “giant of his generation,” is holding events to commemorate the activist, with flags being flown at half-mast in America until September 21.

Vice President J. D. Vance noted that honoring Charlie Kirk would primarily mean the persecution of leftist groups that seek to undermine national unity. According to him, these violent groups must be eliminated. He stated that all available resources in the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and the entire government will be used to identify, disrupt, and destroy these networks and make America safe for the American people again. At the same time, Vance criticized the “generous tax treatment” that George Soros’ Open Society Foundations and the Ford Foundation receive.

President Trump stated he would designate the radical Antifa organization and other leftist groups “internal terrorists.” On September 15, Trump filed a $15 billion libel lawsuit against the New York Times and four of its journalists. Earlier, in July, he filed a $10 billion libel lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and media mogul Rupert Murdoch after the newspaper published an article reporting on his ties to financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was involved in trafficking young girls to the “rich and powerful of this world”.

Kirk’s murder did not consolidate American society and rally it against political violence, but rather triggered an escalation of tensions in day-to-day American life.

On September 15, Republicans in Congress launched a targeted campaign to punish those they accuse of posthumously slandering Charlie Kirk, threatening them with loss of funding and even removal from power. Two Republicans from the House of Representatives introduced a resolution to censure a member of the House, Ilhan Omar (Democrat from Minnesota), and demanded she be removed from the congressional committee, as she posted a message on social media in which she called Kirk “a reprehensible human being” who spewed “racist dog whistles”.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered military personnel to tell on their colleagues who laughed at or praised Kirk’s death.

US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau stated, “Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country…Please feel free to bring such comments to my attention so that the State Department can protect the American people”.

The death of the famous activist on campus shows that America’s intellectual heritage has become a battlefield. History revolves not only around elections, treaties, or wars, but also around individual shocking events—a bullet fired in a lecture hall now echoes through American political life.

With every passing day, the schism in American society is becoming clearer and clearer, and tensions continue to rise.
