Challenges Facing NATO in the Ukraine Crisis

Strategic Council Online - Interview: An international affairs expert stated that the flight of unidentified drones over Polish airspace has sounded a new alarm for European security; an incident that, despite its limited scale, sent severe tremors through the foundations of NATO and U.S.-Europe relations. The situation became more complicated when Polish officials accused Russia of violating its airspace. At the same time, the Kremlin denied such accusations, and some sources even suggested that Ukraine was the origin of these drones. The importance of the issue lies in the fact that Poland, unlike Ukraine, is a member of NATO, and any attack on its territory could trigger the alliance's collective defense clause. However, Donald Trump's cold and ambiguous reaction to the drone incident left Europeans questioning whether Washington would be willing to defend its allies if the crisis escalates. Meanwhile, NATO has launched the "Eastern Guardian" operation to demonstrate its strength on its eastern borders. Still, at the same time, there are signs of hesitation and division among Western countries. These developments have shifted the balance of power in the Ukraine war into a new phase; a war in which Moscow is not retreating from its positions, Europe has no clear strategy to contain the crisis, and the U.S. shows no willingness to confront Russia directly.

The Drone Incident and the Shadow of War in Europe
Ruhollah Modabber, in an interview with the Foreign Relations Strategic Council website, stated: “The incident of unidentified drones flying in Polish airspace cannot be analyzed separately from NATO’s extensive movements and the behind-the-scenes power games in the Ukraine war. What happened in this country was more than a simple border incident.” He added: “Europeans, especially France, Germany, and Britain, are not interested in seeing direct U.S.-Russia talks yield results. In the drone incident, Poland also highlighted the issue with particular sensitivity; a country that has long been seeking a pretext for direct involvement in western Ukraine and even reviving old territorial claims in the region.”
Modabber recalled that “a year ago, a missile also hit Polish soil, and initially Russia was blamed, but it was later revealed that the attack came from Ukrainian air defense.” According to this expert, “the recent incident could also be part of the same scenario; a scenario in which some hardline NATO members want to increase tensions to force Russia into a harsh response and block the path of potential negotiations with the U.S.”

Trump’s Resistance, European Pressure, and the NATO Equation
While European countries expected a firm U.S. response against Russia, Donald Trump’s stance was ambiguous and even sometimes contradictory. On the one hand, he expressed hope for an end to the crisis, and on the other, he emphasized his disappointment in Putin over the drone incident. According to Ruhollah Modabber, this approach “represents a kind of resistance against European pressures for direct confrontation with Russia.”
The international affairs expert said: “Trump is still not fully playing on the field of NATO’s hardline faction. His envoys have taken positions close to the Kremlin in non-public talks. Even some reports indicate behind-the-scenes coordination between Moscow and Washington; coordination aimed at preventing the crisis from entering an uncontrollable phase.”
In his view, “part of Europe is trying to drag the U.S. into a greater confrontation with Russia, while these countries themselves lack the capability and will to enter a direct war.” Modabber added: “The more NATO maneuvers and militarizes its eastern borders, the harsher Russia’s response will be. The Kremlin has repeatedly warned that any official presence of NATO peacekeeping forces in Ukraine will be met with a firm response from Moscow.”
The international affairs analyst noted that “in recent joint drills between Russia and Belarus, Moscow sent a clear message of strength, and even the capture of French forces on the front lines is a sign of the West’s hidden involvement in this war.” According to Modabber, “these incidents not only fail to reduce tensions but also pave the way for broader conflicts.”
Meanwhile, NATO’s new operation, “Eastern Guardian,” has been launched in Poland and other border countries, focusing on air defense and countering drones to strengthen the security of the eastern borders. However, Modabber emphasizes that this show of strength is more an effort to restore lost trust among NATO members than a real solution; trust that has been weakening due to America’s wavering stance and internal European divisions.

Russia’s Upper Hand and the Ukrainian Stalemate
This expert presents a different picture of the Ukraine war front and emphasizes that “on the front lines, the Russians have made significant advances. Changes in military tactics and breakthroughs in Ukrainian defensive layers indicate that Moscow will have a stronger hand in future negotiations. He states that “the U.S. is well aware that if Russia crosses the Dnieper River and takes control of western Ukraine, any negotiations will be conducted from a position of weakness for the West.” Modabber says: “This is why Washington has tried in recent months to keep the door open for dialogue with Russia before the balance shifts on the ground. But Europe remains in a state of hesitation and division, with no clear strategy to end the crisis.”
According to this analyst, “the internal situation in Ukraine is also deteriorating; from widespread protests and arrests to water and electricity crises, and even whispers of a coup.” He adds: “People are being forcibly sent to the front lines, while public morale is severely weakened. In contrast, Russia shows no signs of war fatigue. Its economy remains relatively stable, the ruble has strengthened compared to previous months, and the daily lives of its people are not directly affected by the war.”
Modabber emphasizes that the continuation of this situation benefits Moscow, and time is working against Ukraine and its Western supporters. He warns that “if Europe continues to stall and fails to present a coherent strategy, it will eventually face ground realities that are heavily in favor of the Russians.”
