No country for weak US

By Elham Abedini

US Senator John Barrasso has recently said Joe Biden is an ineffective and weak president. In an interview with Fox News, Barrasso cited failures of the Biden administration, such as the poor handling of the Omicran variant, the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan last August, and the increasing tensions between the US and Russia.

That description may be the most comprehensive one and to find out its accuracy, one should have a look at the history and the long list of Biden's presidential campaign promises which have not been fulfilled.

During his presidential campaign, Biden criticized what former president Donald Trump had done and vowed to do. For example, under “Title 24” - a Trump-era border policy - the US has expelled hundreds of thousands of migrants since March 2020. The policy was dismissed by the Democrats as a human rights violation tool and a racist policy, and even Biden, himself, vowed to rule it out. But now, this policy is being executed. This is only one case and there are many more.

Regarding Iran’s nuclear program; the administration of Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi has shown it is ready for negotiation and working on diplomatic solutions, despite the American and other West mainstream media trying to depict Raeisi as a hardliner even before the election.

Iranian officials have insisted many times that the Islamic Republic is fully determined to resolve the issue. They say Iran is ready for full JCPOA commitment in order to enjoy the economic benefits of the agreement. The country offered two proposed drafts to the 4+1 group, which were entirely in compliance with the JCPOA framework, but Western governments claimed that Iran’s demands were unrealistic, but as time passed, it was proved otherwise. So, there is no doubt that Iran wants to make a good deal - not any deal - and it is determined to do so. But on the other hand, we see a government in the United States that cannot even remain committed to its own slogans and promises.

Meanwhile, Biden’s disapproval rating is about 70% in terms of his performance in different areas such as the handling of COVID-19, inflation, healthcare system, unemployment, and several other issues. The Democratic president has no public support, and, in Congress, the majority of Democratic lawmakers often oppose his decisions. Therefore, it is so difficult for him to make a decision or issue an executive order. It seems that the main obstacle to the removal of all sanctions on Iran is the US government itself and that it cannot do anything to act more effectively.

It is worth mentioning that even former president Barack Obama, who signed the JCPOA himself, did not fulfill his commitments; Trump withdrew from the deal, so no more to expect from the current US president, who is recognized as an ineffective and weak president.
