Speaking on Pakistan’s Dunya News, Mazhar Abbas said the United States did not even wait out the 60-day window set by the Islamabad memorandum before beginning what he called provocative actions, in reference to recent US aggression against Iranian cities.
He said challenging Iran’s survival is the central agenda of the United States and Israeli regime, adding that neither side has genuinely sought to resolve the issues through recognized international channels.
The analyst said the core dispute is not the Strait of Hormuz but implementation of the terms of the Islamabad memorandum, under which the other side was to enter talks with Iran within 60 days of signing.
He said Washington violated that timeline and has since caused delays in negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“Donald Trump is pretending to be the victim and using it as a winning card,” Abbas said, adding that Trump took no action to stop Israeli aggression against Lebanon.
He said no side other than Iran has shown a constructive and reasonable approach in the talks, while the Iranian people want assurances that their rights will not be trampled by the other side.
Separately, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement Sunday that it was closely following developments in the region and expressed deep concern, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and take immediate steps to honor their commitments under the Islamabad memorandum.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, addressing an IRNA question at a press briefing the previous day, said the Islamic Republic of Iran has never been the initiator of any violation of commitments.
He said Iran adheres to the principle of “commitment for commitment” and will continue to honor its obligations as long as the other side does the same, but will halt implementation of its own commitments if the United States continues violating its obligations.
