Amir-Hayat Moghaddam dismissed a recent Persian Gulf Cooperation Council statement, supported by Europe, against three Iranian islands as a baseless and politically-motivated attempt to gain favor with US President Donald Trump.
In an interview with IRNA on Friday, Amir-Hayat Moghaddam said, “Such statements, backed by Europe, are made solely to gain Trump’s favor and will remain at the level of mere statements.”
He further added, “The newly emerging countries in the Persian Gulf are trying to establish a historical, political, and cultural identity for themselves. As a result, they sometimes make claims that are not based in fact, such as the United Arab Emirates’ claim of ownership over the three islands of Lesser Tunb, Greater Tunb, and Abu Musa.”
The legislator said, “The presence of valuable marine and terrestrial minerals, along with newly discovered oil fields, has led Arab countries, supported by Europe, to renew their claims over these three Iranian islands. However, according to historical documents, the islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa rightfully belong to Iran.”
The statement from the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council is primarily political and psychological in nature, lacking any practical significance, he said, adding that the UAE’s claim concerning the Iranian trio islands is devoid of valid legal or historical support and is essentially a baseless claim that contradicts international principles.
Moghaddam underlined that Europeans, by collaborating with Arab countries, are attempting to issue statements against the Islamic Republic of Iran to get closer to Trump, but these efforts are worthless.
