Lawmaker: Pezeshkian’s trip to China will open new chapter in Tehran-Beijing ties

Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi said that President Pezeshkian’s visit to China will open new chapter in Tehran-Beijing ties as the two sides seek broader cooperation.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, speaks to IRNA.
Tehran, IRNA – Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Parliament, says President Masoud Pezeshkian’s trip to China, where he is set to attend the Heads of State Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), will open a new chapter for developing relations between Tehran and Beijing.

Attending the SCO summit, accelerating the implementation of the 25-year cooperation agreement between Iran and China, and reviewing the European troika’s move to activate the ‘snapback mechanism” against Iran will be on the agenda of Pezeshkian’s visit to China, Boroujerdi told IRNA.

He said that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has great capacities in economic, energy, trade, security-defense, and transit sectors.

Since Iran became a full member of the organization in 2023, it has played an important role in developing relations with other member states, he noted.

Boroujerdi also termed the SCO summit, which takes place on Sunday and Monday, as a historic and valuable opportunity for Iran.

Referring to the 25-year cooperation agreement between Iran and China, whose documents have already been signed by both countries, he stressed that the two sides seek broader cooperation within this framework.

The lawmaker referred to the decision earlier this week by the E3 — namely the UK, Germany, and France — to trigger the snapback mechanism against Iran, saying that the “unreasonable and illogical” move is opposed by China and Russia, both permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Boroujerdi, who also heads the Iran-China Friendship Group, said that President Pezeshkian’s trip to China can lead to measures aimed at countering excessive demands of the US and Israel, which have escalated tensions in the West Asia region.

The MP also highlighted the importance of purchasing some military equipment from China by Iran to counter new possible adventurism by the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic.

China’s membership in the UN Security Council has increased its influence on global policy, while the country’s policies, including those toward the Islamic Republic of Iran, are peace-seeking, he stated.

Iran’s vast oil and gas reserves, its position at a strategic transit crossroads connecting east-west and north-south corridors, and its undeniable role in strengthening regional security, peace, and stability are very important points recognized by all SCO members, especially China, the Iranian lawmaker said.

President Masoud Pezeshkian headed to China on Sunday morning to participate in the 25th Heads of State Council meeting of the SCO, which will kick off in the city of Tianjin later in the day. The summit will run on Monday as well.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in 1996 as a Eurasian intergovernmental organization to strengthen multilateral economic, security, and political cooperation, aiming to balance US and NATO influence in the region.
