Israeli president asks MbZ for help recovering prisoners in Gaza

News Desk - The Cradle

Qatar is currently working to renew truce agreement between the Gaza resistance and Israel

Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited the UAE on 30 November, where he asked the country’s President, Mohamed bin Zayed (MbZ), for assistance in freeing prisoners held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

"The President appealed to his friend Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan to employ his full political weight to promote and speed up the return home of the hostages," read a statement released by Herzog’s media office.

The Israeli president visited the UAE to attend the UN climate summit, COP28. This was his first trip outside of Israel since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and the outbreak of the Gaza-Israel war on 7 October.

The UAE and Israel enjoy close ties, as the Gulf country was among the Arab states that normalized with Tel Aviv as part of the Abraham Accords in 2020.

Abu Dhabi drew heavy criticism following the outbreak of the war when it condemned Hamas’ operation.

Herzog’s visit came as a brittle truce between Israel and the Gaza resistance expired.

Early on 1 December, a seventh prisoner release round was held. Dozens of prisoners on both sides have been released over the past seven days.

Mediators failed to find a “formula” for the releases to include Israeli men and military personnel, according to Reuters. As a result of the last seven exchanges, there is now a limited number of Israeli women and children being held by Hamas.

The resistance group has so far rejected any agreement to include captive Israeli men and soldiers, as it aims to use them for a broader exchange deal that would see the release of all the thousands of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Israel released a statement upon the resumption of fighting on 1 December, accusing Hamas of violating the agreement by not meeting “its obligation to release all hostage women” and by firing rockets.

Hamas announced its forces had resumed its confrontation with invading Israeli troops inside Gaza

Qatar has said that Israel’s resumption of bombing has complicated efforts but that it is working to renew the truce agreement.
