Expansion of the Bushehr Power Plant Underway

 Russian Ambassador to Tehran

In an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, Alexey Dedov, the ambassador to Iran, discussed the cooperation between Russia and Iran in trade, culture, and tourism.

Nournews: He highlighted the growing bilateral relations and ongoing strategic projects between the two countries.

15% growth in Iran-Russia trade in 2024

Dedov stated: "Trade between Russia and Iran has shown a generally positive trend, though it is still too early to talk about its full potential. It is expected that the volume of trade between Iran and Russia in 2024 will increase by approximately 15% compared to 2023, when it stood at $4.2 billion. We anticipate that the meeting of the Permanent Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation between Iran and Russia, scheduled to be held in Russia in the coming months, will accelerate this trend. By the end of this year, we expect a further increase in bilateral trade volume."

Russia’s Mir payment cards to be accepted in Iran soon

The Russian diplomat added: "We expect that Russia’s Mir payment cards will be launched in Iran in the near future. These measures will undoubtedly have a positive impact on trade and economic relations between the two countries, facilitating business transactions and expanding areas of economic cooperation."

Iran gains access to the 190-million-member EAEU market

In his interview with TV BRICS, Dedov emphasized: "The free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Iran was ratified by Iran’s Guardian Council on March 2, 2025. Thanks to this development, we can speak about the imminent implementation of this agreement. The Eurasian Economic Union currently represents a market of 190 million people and offers Iran preferential conditions for importing goods, simplified customs procedures, and easier technical regulations. The same conditions are provided for EAEU exporters in the Iranian market. This is a mutually beneficial cooperation that serves the interests of the people."

Cultural cooperation between Iran and Russia: Major events on the way

The Russian diplomat pointed out: " A Russian Cultural Center is supposed to be established in Tehran, in accordance with the agreement signed on April 13, 2021, regarding the establishment and operation of cultural centers. The 'Rossotrudnichestvo' office is actively searching for a suitable location for this center. The key cultural event of the year will be the 'Days of Russian Culture in Iran,' scheduled for June."

Scientific and technological cooperation: Long-term development in focus

Dedov stressed: "It is important that this document highlights both parties’ commitment to developing long-term and constructive relations in higher education, science, and technology. Partnerships between educational institutions of both countries have been established, joint scientific, technical, and research projects are being implemented, and specialized seminars, conferences, and exhibitions are being held. This agreement not only confirms the current high level of relations but also lays the groundwork for more fruitful cooperation in cultural, scientific, and educational fields."

Bushehr power plant expansion: A priority in Tehran-Moscow relations

The Russian diplomat reiterated: "Projects related to peaceful nuclear energy, including the construction of the second and third units of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, are currently being implemented. Additionally, there is cooperation in the field of medical isotopes. Through this collaboration, our country supports its Iranian friends in advancing modern medicine, providing access to new diagnostic and treatment methods for various diseases. This cooperation significantly enhances the quality of patient care."

Russian gas supplies to Iran: A strategic agreement underway

He told TV BRICS: "I would like to highlight the strategic memorandum signed in June 2024 between Iranian and Russian gas companies to organize the supply of Russian natural gas to Iran via pipeline. At present, implementation activities for this agreement are in progress. Russia is also participating in the development of Iran’s oil fields. Other initiatives include the North-South International Transport Corridor and the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway section as part of its western branch."

47% increase in Iranian tourists to Russia: E-visa facilitates travel

The Russian ambassador to Iran stated: "Currently, visa-free travel regulations apply to tour groups of 5 to 50 people. At present, there is no specific plan to expand these categories. Overall, bilateral tourism increased by 13% in 2024. The number of Iranian tourists visiting Russia has grown significantly, reaching 58,000, a 47% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, 5,000 Russian tourists have visited Iran. Nearly 30,000 Iranians entered Russia under the visa-free travel mechanism, while the number of Russian tourists traveling to Iran was 500. Additionally, an e-visa system is available for Iranian citizens, through which more than 15,000 Iranians traveled to Russia last year."

BRICS’ key role in strengthening Iran-Russia relations

The Russian ambassador emphasized that BRICS serves as a crucial international platform for cooperation with Iranian partners.

He added: "The values of this organization—such as respect for international law, national sovereignty, and mutual interests, along with the recognition of each country’s right to choose its own development path, as well as solidarity and mutual assistance—are fully endorsed by Moscow and Tehran. Our Iranian friends have repeatedly expressed interest in cooperation in innovative and knowledge-based sectors of the economy and have shown readiness to share experiences in certain fields. We fully support them."
