In an interview with the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Mohammad Khajui said: “During the last year, unprecedented anti-Israeli protests took place in various countries of the world, including Western countries and specifically in Europe, which are still ongoing. The reason for this issue is that the depth of the Israeli regime’s crimes against the Palestinians has never been revealed as much as last year.
He added: “In the last year, more than 40,000 Palestinians lost their lives, many of whom were women and children, and this is not an issue that can be justified or covered.”
According to Khajui, this anti-Israel mood in Western countries is an important event. It shows that this atmosphere is not exclusive to the Islamic and Arab worlds, which is a positive aspect.
The expert continued: “But the important thing is that as long as these protests are only symbolic, held in the street, and do not affect the performance of governments, they cannot be very effective. Only in the atmosphere of public opinion is the Israeli regime under pressure. It is assumed that this issue is not important for the authorities of this regime under the status quo.
Khajui explained: “For the Israeli regime, security has always been the main issue, and the question of this regime’s image has always been a secondary issue from its own perspective. Therefore, the performance of other governments is very important for the Israeli regime.”
He emphasized: “Despite the spread of anti-Israeli protests in Western countries, Western governments did not take any practical and serious efforts to put pressure on Tel Aviv.”
He continued: “The efforts and measures that have been taken, such as the fact that some European countries have taken steps towards the political recognition of Palestine, are not much of a deterrent against the Israeli regime; “The actions taken by governments must be deterrent and not merely symbolic.”
According to Khajui, the Israeli regime’s behavior will change only when these countries take action against it. For example, these countries should change their political relations with the Israeli regime; for example, they should cut off their diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv, reduce the amount of arms they sell to this regime, or finally, pass binding resolutions against it in international assemblies.
He added: “Otherwise, it seems that these actions taken by Western countries are more aimed at gaining the satisfaction of public opinion in their countries to say that they have taken action against the Israeli regime. But in fact, these measures are not effective.”
Referring to the main challenge of Western countries towards the Israeli regime, the researcher of West Asian issues explained: “These countries have a series of strategic relations with the Israeli regime, and this regime is considered their strategic ally in the region. In such a situation, they don’t want the Israeli regime to suffer a so-called strategic blow and lose its weight vis-à-vis the rival countries in the region. But at the same time, they cannot remain silent about some of the crimes of this regime.”
He explained that, for this reason, during the last year after the start of the war, Western countries’ actions were often symbolic, and they did not act outside of this framework.
Khajui said that the actions and pressures of the Westerners have been such that they have had no practical effect on the Israeli regime, and at the same time, they have been able to respond to the pressures from the field of public opinion.
The expert finally said: “Although these protests show the awakened conscience of the nations, in the absence of strong support, there will be no practical effect on the actions of the governments, and they cannot take a practical and deterrent action against the Israeli regime, these protests will not be very effective in practice.”
The expert on West Asian issues emphasized that as a result of the pressure of other countries, the Israeli regime should give in to the rights of the Palestinians and allow the formation of an independent Palestinian state in compliance with international rules. However, at present, there is no practical pressure on the Israeli regime to give in to a global demand.
