Iran summons UK ambassador to protest baseless accusations

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the UK ambassador to Tehran to protest the British government’s baseless accusations against the Islamic Republic.

Ambassador Simon Shercliff was summoned by the director-general for the Foreign Ministry’s Western Europe Department on Tuesday and was informed of Iran’s strong protest, IRNA reported.

The ministry official said recent sanctions imposed by London against a number of Iranian officials were illegal and condemned the baseless accusations made by British authorities.

He strongly criticized the ongoing provocations by the UK government against Iran, considering them another ring in a chain of “destructive and unconstructive” actions towards the Islamic Republic.

“This is a bitter historical irony that a country that is the founder and supporter of organized terrorist groups, drug trafficking, and criminal gangs wants to make accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its loyal and honest forces, who are at the forefront of fighting organized crimes,” the official said.

In response, the UK ambassador said that he would convey Iran's protest to London.
