A smuggling attempt was initially suspected, but turned out to be a false alarm

“Soldiers were rushed to the scene, began a chase, and arrested five of the suspects, who were not armed,” Hebrew news outlet Walla reported.
“Two additional suspects who infiltrated Israel escaped from the security forces and returned to Jordanian territory,” it was revealed after an investigation.
The investigation also revealed that the infiltrators were “job seekers” who posed no security threat. The five detainees are set to be returned to Jordan shortly.
This incident follows a significant uptick in smuggling operations on Israel’s border with Jordan.
Last week, Israeli authorities reportedly foiled an attempt to smuggle a large number of weapons from Jordan.
“The Israel-Jordan border has become a weak point in everything related to the smuggling of weapons and ammunition from the territory of the Hashemite Kingdom,” Walla writes, adding that the “operational challenge has become complex because of the large sums of money that Hamas invests in the matter.”
According to an investigation released by The Cradle on 16 June, border smuggling into the West Bank from Syria and Iraq via Jordan has become “increasingly sophisticated.”
This, along with buying weapons from the Israeli black market through organized theft of weapons and ammunition from army bases, has become the West Bank resistance’s main source of weapons.
In April, Jordanian MP Imad al-Adwan was arrested at a border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank on suspicions of smuggling weapons into the West Bank.
As a result of his parliamentary immunity being revoked by Jordan, Adwan now faces trial and potential jail time in his country. He has been referred to as a “national hero.”
