Sultan of Oman to visit Iran regarding nuclear talks

ByNews Desk- The Cradle

Oman has historically acted as an intermediary between Tehran and Washington to resolve issues concerning nuclear negotiations

The Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, will visit Tehran to hold talks regarding the stalled nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US, Tasnim news agency reported today, 22 February.

Ali Alizadeh, a member of Iran’s parliament, said to Tasnim that “Omani officials have recently indicated their readiness to play the role of mediator between Iran and the United States in order to bring the nuclear talks to a conclusion.”

Moreover, he mentioned that “the Sultan of Oman had declared his intention to visit Iran shortly to deliver good news.”

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that a revival of negotiations to reach a nuclear deal is still possible, according to Hispan TV.

“The path of negotiations is still open and messages are being exchanged through intermediaries,” Amir-Abdollahian announced on 22 February in a meeting with the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament.

According to the top Iranian diplomat, “the Omani authorities have repeatedly expressed their willingness to act as a mediator between Iran and the United States to conclude the nuclear negotiations.”

He also revealed that the Central Bank of Qatar “has entered the dispute between Iran and the US” to play the role of mediator between the two sides regarding monetary and banking issues.

“In this context, indirect negotiations are taking place between the US Treasury and the Central Bank of Iran through the Central Bank of Qatar,” Amir-Abdollahian added.

Last week, the Iranian foreign minister held a phone call with his Omani counterpart, Badr al-Sayyid al-Busaidi, to discuss the latest developments regarding the nuclear deal negotiations and the lifting of sanctions against Tehran.

It comes at a time when UN experts are questioning the legality of the US sanctions against Iran under international law, as well as the legality of their extraterritorial application, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Three weeks ago, the US imposed new restrictions on exports from seven Iranian entities, following allegations of support for Russian military industries. The US Treasury Department also imposed sanctions primarily targeting the Iranian drone industry.

The US has imposed crippling sanctions on Iran after Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal under the administration of former President Donald Trump.
