Iran has reached a stage where the sanctions are no longer pressuring the country, said an MP.
However, the achievement of an agreement on the revival of a 2015 nuclear deal and removal of the U.S. sanctions is what everybody would like to see as it will benefit all sides, added Abbas Golrou, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily.
He noted that having survived the pressure of the U.S. unilateral coercive measures, Iran is currently in the post-sanctions era in practice, stressing that, nevertheless, since the swift conclusion of the nuclear talks will be in the interests of the people, the Iranian Parliament is following up on the issue.
The lawmaker said that Parliament advises that the Iranian administration and negotiating team should spare no effort to bring the talks to fruition while ensuring that any potential outcome must safeguard the interests of the people and country as well the Islamic Republic’s authority simultaneously.
All sides at present seek to reach a nuclear agreement, but the timing of that is not very clear as the United States has so far refrained from cooperating favorably and showing the necessary flexibility toward Iran’s proposals, Golrou added.
Iran signed the nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in July 2015, accepting to put some curbs on its peaceful nuclear activities in return for the removal of the sanctions on the country. In May 2018, however, former U.S. president Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the JCPOA and reimposed Washington’s sanctions on Tehran, prompting the latter, after a year of strategic patience, to reduce its commitments under the deal.
Since April 2021, Iran and the remaining JCPOA parties have held several rounds of negotiations to revive the nuclear accord. In August, the European Union proposed a final draft of a potential agreement, to which Iran and the United States indirectly exchanged their responses, but to no avail due to the latter’s excessive demands and failure to make its political decision.
