Planned talks between Qatar and Israel on World Cup cancelled: Report

ByNews Desk- The Cradle

The World Soccer Federation FIFA has confirmed that Israelis are able to purchase tickets for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

According to reports by Hebrew media released on 31 August, a plan for secret talks between Doha and Tel Aviv has fallen apart due to Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid insisting that the talks be made public.

Lapid’s demands resulted in the cancellation of a prearranged phone call between the Prime Minister and Qatar’s Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, which was meant to serve as a “preliminary conversation.”

The agenda of the talks would have included negotiations regarding an Israeli diplomatic presence at the World Cup 2022. A sensitive issue for Qatari officials.

According to the report, Israel had also planned to continue its presence after the World Cup as a step to normalization.

However, the Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry has denied the report, saying that “the story wasn’t true” in a statement to i24News.

Israeli football fans will be allowed to enter Qatar for the World Cup, and Tel Aviv has previously announced that it will allow international flights to pass to and from Qatar through its airspace throughout the duration of the FIFA World Cup tournament.

Qatar and Israel lack an official diplomatic relationship but do have the means of open communication available.

The Gulf state made clear that it will only consider an official normalization of ties with Israel upon the formation of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.

In 1995, Israel established a commercial office in Doha upon opening lines of communication with the Gulf country, however, it was shut down by Qatari authorities five years later in response to Tel Aviv’s launch of a military operation in Gaza in 2000.

Eli Avadar, a member of the Israeli Knesset has denied such reports, saying that Qatar “lied to all Islamic countries,” claiming that Doha secretly maintained the office.

In July this year, it was reported that Israeli military officials were sent to a US military base in Qatar as part of Israel’s alliance with the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which it joined in 2021.
