THE BLESSED PARENTS OF THE PROPHET OF MERCY: A DIVINE HONOUR BEYOND MEASURE

By Professor Abdullahi Danladi
As we celebrate the blessed occasion of the Maulid of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), our hearts are filled with gratitude to Allah for the greatest mercy ever granted to humanity. We celebrate not only the birth of the Prophet of mercy, compassion, and guidance, but also the remarkable blessing bestowed upon the two noble souls whom Allah chose to be the means through which this mercy entered the world: Sayyidah Aminah bint Wahb and Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib.
When we reflect deeply, we realise that Allah’s choices are never accidental. Human nature itself teaches us that when someone possesses something extremely precious, they carefully choose the safest and most honourable place to preserve it. The greater the treasure, the greater the care taken in selecting its custodian. What treasure in existence could ever be greater than Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), the beloved Messenger of Allah and the mercy sent to all creation?
It is therefore a profound honour beyond human imagination that Allah selected Aminah and Abdullah to carry the responsibility of bringing this blessed light into the world. They were chosen for an amanah unlike any other — the amanah of being the parents of the final Messenger of Allah, the one through whom humanity would receive divine guidance, spiritual enlightenment, and a path towards justice and mercy.
Sayyidah Aminah was not only a mother in the ordinary sense; she was the blessed woman whose womb carried the greatest human being ever created. Through her, Allah prepared the arrival of a Prophet whose message would awaken hearts, transform societies, and continue to inspire billions of people across generations. Her honour lies not only in giving birth to Muhammad (SAWA) , but in being the chosen mother of the one described by Allah as “a mercy to the worlds.”
Similarly, Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib carries an eternal honour as the father of the Prophet (SAWA). Although he left this world before witnessing the greatness of his son’s mission, his name remains permanently connected with the most honoured human being in history. Among all fathers who have ever lived, he occupies a unique position — for Allah chose him to be part of the lineage through which the light of prophethood would appear.
The greatness of Aminah and Abdullah is therefore not based merely on worldly status or position. Their greatness comes from the divine trust placed upon them. Allah, in His perfect wisdom, selected them as the noble gateway through which His mercy would reach humanity. Their lives remind us that Allah prepares special people for special responsibilities.
The Maulid of the Prophet (SAWA) should therefore inspire us to look beyond the celebration of a historical event. It should awaken within us a deeper appreciation of the divine plan that surrounded his birth — from his blessed lineage, to his noble parents, to the mission that would change the destiny of humankind.
As we send our blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), let us also remember with love and respect his blessed parents, Sayyidah Aminah and Abdullah. Their honour is a reminder of Allah’s wisdom, generosity, and mercy. Through them, humanity received the greatest gift it has ever known.
O Allah, on this blessed occasion of Maulid, shower Your endless mercy and blessings upon the parents of Your beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWA). Reward them for the noble amanah they carried and the role they played in bringing Your mercy to the world. Increase our love for Your Messenger, strengthen our commitment to his teachings, and make us among those who truly follow his path of compassion, justice, and peace.
For the world was blessed with many gifts, but none greater than the gift of Muhammad (SAWA)— the Prophet of mercy. And before that mercy reached humanity, Allah honoured two blessed souls to become its gateway.
