Iraqi PM announces withdrawal of US combat troops has been finalized

Stakeholders have rejected the decision to keep the troops in the country on what the government says is a training mission

On 29 December, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said the withdrawal of forces under the US-led international coalition has been finalized.

In a message posted on his Twitter account, Al-Kadhimi said that ”the coalition have fully completed their combat role after the transfer of personnel and material outside Iraq.”

He went on to say that the forces will, however, remain in the country to ”to advise and assist” the Iraqi security forces.

The statement by Al-Kadhimi is similar to the one that was issued by National Security Adviser Qassem Al-Araji on 9 December stating that the combat mission of the US-led coalition had come to an end and that its forces will no longer engage in combat duties, but that it will offer ”advisory services” to the Iraqi army.

On 26 July 2021, US President Joe Biden and Al-Kadhimi signed an agreement stating that the US will withdraw its troops from Iraq before the end of 2021.

The decision to keep the US troops in the country on the alleged ‘training and advisory mission’ has been condemned by some stakeholders who are demanding for the complete withdrawal of all US troops from the country.

They say the purported training mission is just an excuse to keep the troops in the country.

On 26 December, the head of the Fatah Alliance Hadi al-Ameri said the complete withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq is ”non-negotiable.”

“My message is clear to the US forces and the Iraqi government. You should implement what was agreed. We do not accept any manipulation, fraud, or changes to missions,” Al-Ameri said.

He added that the government of Iraq should respect the resolution that was passed by parliament on 5 January 2021 to expel all foreign troops from the country.

The resolution stated that ”the government commits to revoke its request for assistance from the international coalition fighting Islamic State due to the end of military operations in Iraq and the achievement of victory.”
