Biden and Trump showed who they are

By Myles Hoenig

Who would have thought the debate would go any way differently than it did? Does one expect to have Godzilla at a party and the dishes remain on the table and the house not destroyed? Three takeaways. The elephant in the room was clearly Trump. His behavior was insulting to kindergarten children hungry for a snack. He was abusive, bullying, insulting, lying, braggadocios undeservedly, and frankly out of control.

One no longer has to wonder how he negotiates with people he feels are his inferiors, namely everyone. Is this how he treats leaders at the G7? Not one to feel any sympathy for Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer, but one can only now after last evening’s performance.

Biden was not the charmer either. He also interrupted, but mostly defensively, and went personal with his own name calling- liar, clown, the worst president, and other colorful terms, not that any of them were not good descriptive words for Trump. Probably the highlight was him saying “Will you shut up, man”? His exasperation was palpable and shared by nearly all, including many of Trump’s own supporters.

Another takeaway was Biden’s expectations. He didn’t drool. He didn’t forget his or Trump’s name. He didn’t make up stories about his childhood in the middle of a discussion on serious issues. He was weak in many of his proposals but did have moments of clarity that surpassed nearly anything Trump had to say. Probably Biden’s greatest asset as a candidate was his ability to speak directly to the camera to the American people and come off as being empathetic, as well as sympathetic, character traits non-existent in Trump.

Lastly, Biden showed who he was politically. He definitely distanced himself from the progressive elements of the party, namely the Sanders/Ocasio-Cortez wing, which actually represents a far greater percent of the population that Biden does. He has shown that he is simply Republican-lite. Against the Green New Deal, which was a very weakened version of the Green Party’s Green New Deal of 10 years ago. He’s also a law and order kind of person, seeing the left almost as much as a threat as the Republicans, as the left attacks systemic economic inequality.

As Biden says, HE is the Democratic Party.
