New US sanctions targeting Iran show Washington is 'desperate' and 'in decline': Analyst

New US sanctions targeting Iran are symptomatic of the fact that the United States is “desperate” and “in decline,” says Patrick Lawrence, an American political analyst and foreign affairs journalist.

Lawrence made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday when was asked about a statement by the Department of Treasury that Washington imposed Iran-related sanctions on several individuals and entities, including some based in China and Singapore.

“Today, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated eight entities for their involvement in the sale and purchase of Iranian petrochemical products brokered by Triliance Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (Triliance), an entity designated by Treasury in January 2020. These entities, based in Iran, China, and Singapore, engaged in transactions facilitated by Triliance or otherwise assisted Triliance’s efforts to process and move funds generated by the sale of those petrochemical products,” the Treasury statement said.

Iran “benefits from a global network of entities facilitating the Iranian petrochemical sector,” said Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.

Lawrence said what is happening equates to what he called “the globalization of the campaign against Iran.”

“There's nothing rational about American foreign policy now,” he said, adding that also US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “is trying to get as much done before the elections” on Tuesday because “he might be out no matter who wins but he'll certainly be out if President (Donald) Trump loses.”

He went on to say, “I would like Iranian people to understand that they are witnessing and suffering from the actions of a desperate power.”

“The behavior of the United States in this phase is the behavior of a nation that knows it is in decline. It knows that the non-West is emergent - Iran, Russia, China, India - and deep down knows there's nothing it can do about it, so the consequence is desperate irrational actions. That's what we have here.”
