That fascism is now well entrenched in the corridors of power in India is not in doubt.
What is alarming is that this virus has infected even the Supreme Court of India as is evident from its verdict on the Babri Mosque land title dispute.
On November 9, the Supreme Court issued a stunning verdict handing title of the land in Ayodhya to Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the main Hindu plaintiff.
For 470 years, a mosque, called the Babri Mosque, had stood on the 2.7-acre site until a mob of Hindu zealots led by Lal Krishna Advani demolished it on December 6, 1992.
Advani was a leading light of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)—the current ruling party in India led by the mass murderer, Narendra Modi.
Why the Indian Supreme Court verdict is so dangerous and poses an existential threat to minorities, especially Muslims, in India needs to be properly understood.
The court has not only sided with the mob and given green light to its act of vandalism, it has called for a trust to be set up that would manage the site.
But here is the rub. The government would set up the ‘trust’.
The fascist forces and their politico-religious fellow travelers that were responsible for the mosque’s demolition in the first place now control the government.
Thus, the Supreme Court, far from adjudicating the matter in a fair and legal manner, has handed decision-making to the same forces that had created the crisis through their act of political vandalism.
Let us understand the nature of the ‘dispute’. A mosque had stood on the site since the sixteenth century. Muslims prayed there regularly.
In 1949, two years after India’s independence in August 1947, a group of Hindu zealots claimed that the Babri Mosque, named after the first Mughal Emperor Zaheeruddin Baber, was erected on the site where the Hindu god Rama was ‘born’. They further claimed it was the site of a Hindu temple.
For the record, there are two other places in India that claim the Hindu god was born there.
Muslims rulers did not go about demolishing Hindu temples or places of worship of other religions in India or anywhere else in the world. It is forbidden in Islam.
Further, even a Hindu god could not be born in three different places simultaneously!
The Indian Archaelogical Society dismissed the Hindu zealots’ claim saying there is no evidence that a Hindu temple ever existed on this site.
Truth and historical evidence did not deter the Hindu zealots who surreptitiously planted a few idols inside the mosque claiming it was their sacred site.
The mosque was sealed and the matter lingered on in the local court in Faizabad where Ayodhya is located until the heady day of December 6, 1992.
While the mob was led by the BJP, it was Narasimha Rao of the Congress Party who was India’s prime minister at the time.
Far from confronting mob violence led by his political rivals, Narasimha Rao allowed this act of political vandalism to stand.
So in the matter of anti-Muslim venom, there is little to choose between the BJP and Congress. They are equal opportunity Muslim haters.
Today, the BJP is in power. Its ideology of Hindu supremacy based on Nazism is rampaging through India.
Its storm troopers—the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Sangh Parivar (SP) and Vishwa Hindu Prashad (VHP)—have been given the green light to intensify their anti-Muslim campaign.
BJP leaders have openly declared that religious minorities especially Muslims and Christians must either convert to Hinduism or leave India.
They have announced the deadline of December 2021 to accomplish this demonic task.
The Indian Supreme Court’s verdict on the Babri Mosque is extremely dangerous. It signals to all minorities in India that they do not have equal rights in the country. The constitution means nothing. It has been reduced to little more than toilet paper.
India is well on its way to becoming a full-fledged fascist state. Its consequences are too horrifying to even contemplate.
