TEHRAN - The mayor of Rasht, Rahim Shoqi, presented the northern Iranian city’s tourism and cultural potentials at the 6th BRICS Urbanization Forum held in Moscow.
Addressing mayors and officials from BRICS countries, Shoqi highlighted Rasht’s unique offerings, especially its globally recognized local cuisine, branding the city as the “food heaven” of Iran.
Shoqi emphasized Rasht’s dedication to promoting its natural and organic foods, which have received acclaim from international experts like French Iranologist Christian Bromberger.
Known for its over 250 types of local dishes and more than 2,000 restaurants and cafes, Rasht is also a UNESCO Creative City with a focus on gastronomy, the mayor said.
“The city has established a permanent secretariat for creative cities in Iran and plans to develop a food museum, a breakfast park, and a campaign to promote local cuisine.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Shoqi discussed Rasht’s commitment to sustainable development through its culinary culture, noting that the city’s efforts in this area have led to increased employment and tourism.
He also extended an invitation for direct cooperation and tourism exchanges with BRICS countries and expressed readiness to enhance trade relations through the Anzali Free Trade Zone and the Rasht-Astrakhan flight route.
“Rasht is a popular destination for tourists, especially from Arab and Central Asian countries, and aims to boost its profile on the international stage through its rich cultural heritage and culinary attractions.”
The two-day forum, which concluded on August 28, focused on development, network cooperation, and the climate agenda among Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and African countries.
According to organizers, the 6th BRICS International Municipal Forum was one of the largest platforms for discussing municipal cooperation issues and exchanging experience in the run-up to the BRICS Summit.
Rasht, recognized as a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO, stands as a vibrant amalgamation of flavors and traditions. Among Rasht’s renowned dishes, Reshteh-Khoshkar holds a place of honor. Passed down through generations, this traditional treat is a Ramadan mainstay. Comprising rice flour, wheat flour, sugar, almonds, walnuts, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, and a symphony of spices, it embodies the essence of Rashti cuisine.
