Raisi visit to Pakistan: an opportune moment for cementing cooperation

By Muhammad Mudassir Tipu Pakistani Ambassador to Iran

TEHRAN - In a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the neighboring countries, Dr. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, accompanied by a high-level delegation of his important cabinet members and senior officers, is set to visit Pakistan from April 22-24, 2024 at the invitation of Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

During the visit, President Ebrahim Raisi would hold meetings with the leadership of Pakistan to explore various avenues of cooperation to further solidify the existing bonds.

Pakistan and Iran enjoy deep historical ties which are anchored on religious, social, and cultural affinities.  Both countries share a border of over 900 km, which holds considerable importance for regional connectivity, fostering economic growth and cooperation in various spheres.

Iran was the first country to recognize Pakistan as an independent state, while in 1979, Pakistan was the first country to recognize the Revolutionary Establishment in Iran.

Pakistan-Iran relations have witnessed an upward trajectory over the last few years. President Raisi felicitated Prime Minister Muhammad Shebaz Sharif on assumption of office for the second time, 5 March 2024.

Pakistan and Iran possess immense potential for trade and investment collaboration, given their strategic geographical locations and abundant natural resources. The visit presents an opportune moment for leaders from both sides to explore avenues for leveraging each other's strengths in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and infrastructure development. By deepening economic ties, both countries can unlock new opportunities for growth and prosperity, benefiting not only their respective economies but also the broader region.

President Raisi's visit is expected to focus on enhancing connectivity between Pakistan and Iran. The development of road infrastructure can significantly bolster trade and people-to-people exchanges, facilitating smoother movement of goods and fostering greater regional integration. Both countries agreed last year to enhance the bilateral trade to the tune of US$ 5 billion by 2028.

In addition to economic cooperation, security and regional stability are likely to feature prominently in discussions between President Raisi and the Pakistani leadership. Both countries face common challenges, including border security issues and the threat of terrorism. Collaborative efforts in intelligence sharing, border management, and counterterrorism measures would help promote peace and stability in the region.

Iran has been extending vocal support on the Kashmir issue at the highest level. The Supreme Leader, on a number of occasions, has spoken against the Indian Government’s policies on Kashmir.

President Ebrahim Raisi's visit to Pakistan underscores the importance of bilateral relations and the shared commitment of both countries to deepen cooperation across various domains. By leveraging their geographic proximity and historical ties, Pakistan and Iran will forge a stronger partnership that benefits not only their citizens but also contributes to peace and prosperity in the broader region. As both nations navigate the complexities of the contemporary geopolitical landscape, their continued engagement and collaboration are essential for realizing their shared goals of development, stability, and progress.
