Russia expands extremist list to include LGBT movement

Tehran, IRNA - Russia's Federal Financial Monitoring Service has broadened its list of individuals and organizations associated with extremist activities or terrorism to now encompass "the international LGBT social movement and its structural units".

The decision comes in the wake of a ruling by the Russian Supreme Court last November, which affirmed the Ministry of Justice's classification of the "international LGBT movement" as extremist.

The court also acknowledged the movement's various branches as falling under the same category and subsequently prohibited them.

As per regulations, financial institutions are mandated to freeze the assets of listed individuals and halt services for them.

However, critics have said that the ambiguous wording around the "international LGBT movement" makes it difficult to interpret.
