No substitute for UNRWA's work in Gaza, says envoy

TEHRAN, (MNA) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) plays an irreplaceable role in offering critical assistance to the Gaza Strip, a UN envoy said on Tuesday.

"There is no substitute" for UNRWA's capacity, knowledge, and the essential services it offers to Palestinians, Xinhua reported citing UN senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag.

She added that any replacement would require a political decision by the UN General Assembly.

UNRWA's operations currently face uncertainty due to the suspension of funding by several donor countries, including the US.

Meanwhile, noting the absence of a ceasefire in Gaza, Kaag said that the ongoing conflicts have hindered aid efforts.

"There is no space to have monitors all over Gaza to work with the agencies to see, to verify and monitor," she said, stressing the importance of increasing the flow of commercial goods into Gaza in addition to humanitarian assistance.

"There will be no recovery, let alone reconstruction in the future, without that broad bandwidth," she said.

The Zionist regime waged the Gaza war on October 7 after the Palestinian Resistance movement, Hamas, carried out a surprise operation into the occupied territories in retaliation for the regime’s ceaseless atrocities against the Palestinian people over the past seven decades.

So far, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 26,751 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 65,636 others.

The Israeli military has committed war crimes in Gaza by targeting medical facilities, personnel, and transport and destroying the healthcare system in the Palestinian territory.
