Italy lifts Saudi arms embargo over ‘changed situation’ in Yemen

Several western countries have been implicated in war crimes over arms sales to the Saudi-led coalition

Italy lifted an embargo on arms exports to Saudi Arabia on 31 May, the Italian government said in a statement.

The embargo had been imposed in 2019 and made permanent in January 2021 over Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.

According to the Italian statement, the embargo is not necessary any longer due to “the changed situation” on the ground in Yemen.

The statement also lauded Saudi Arabia’s “peace mediation efforts,” referring to recent Omani-mediated peace talks between the kingdom and Yemen’s Ansarallah resistance movement.

According to Rome, the decision to lift the embargo on Saudi Arabia is “in line” with its lifting of another embargo on the UAE last month, which had been imposed over Abu Dhabi’s deep involvement in the Saudi-led coalition against Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has recently been involved in Omani-mediated peace negotiations with Yemen, as part of which it has agreed to eventually lift its blockade on the country’s main port and airport, as well as pay the salaries of government employees – who have not been paid since 2016.

The negotiations have also resulted in the exchange of hundreds of prisoners from both sides.

However, Sanaa government officials have accused Saudi Arabia of “procrastinating” in efforts to lift the blockade on the country.

The Emirati occupation of the country’s ports, islands, and oilfields, as well as the illegal presence of US, French, and British troops, have complicated efforts to reach a quick solution. Ansarallah has recently warned that if the kingdom does not pick up the pace and abide by its agreements, it is ready for all-out war.

The group has also threatened to confront the foreign military presence in the country.

There has been documented use of internationally banned weapons by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. A number of western countries and companies have been implicated in war crimes as a result of supplying weapons to the kingdom.
