Former French president: EU ‘enslaved’ by US

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy expressed the opinion that the European Union is “enslaved” by the United States.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, he recalled that in 2008, together with former German chancellor Angela Merkel, he refused Ukraine’s entry into NATO. He believed that otherwise Russia would regard this as a provocation, news.russia.postsen.com reported.

Sarkozy appreciated the readiness of current French President Emmanuel Macron to communicate with the Russian authorities to end the conflict in Ukraine.

Sarkozy told the French daily that he doubted the legitimacy of the decisions of the European Commission, which should be responsible only for the administrative functions of the European Union.

Emmanuel Macron has recently predicted a “prospect for peace” in Ukraine despite Russian warnings that the conflict may further escalate amid a persisting flow of Western weapons to the country.

Macron made the remarks as Paris remains one of Ukraine’s Western backers, which continues to supply Kiev with massive amounts of weapons and other military supplies as part of a bid by the US-led NATO military alliance.
