In a statement released on Sunday, Hamas said that the various resistance groups in Gaza should "close ranks ... and continue to gather in the Old City of al-Quds and preserve the prayers at the al-Aqsa Mosque.”
It underlined the need for the resistance groups to "stay with their fingers on the trigger by preparing missiles and targeting them on enemy bastions and vital military installations”.
The statement went on to call on the Islamic groups to "reach the al-Aqsa Mosque and hold prayers in front of the military checkpoints that are preventing entry to al-Quds. You should hold a presence all over Palestine during the night and make sure the settlers don’t infiltrate. We should confuse the Zionists”.
The statement came in the wake of clashes that have taken place over the past several days in al-Quds between the Zionist and Arab protesters and amid renewed attacks by the Zionist regime against the Palestinians and retaliatory rocket fire on the occupied lands from the Gaza Strip.
Tens of rockets were fired toward the occupied territories from the Gaza Strip in recent days in reprisal for the regime’s attacks.
The barrages were the worst assault from the strip in many months and the rockets did cause damage in a number of communities.
The new scuffles took place at Bab al-Amoud (Damascus) Gate overnight into Sunday, as the Zionist troops tried to prevent the Palestinians from holding their usual prayers during the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
The regime forces attacked the worshipers using teargas canisters, stun grenades and foul-smelling water cannons.
They also physically assaulted some of the Palestinians while attempting to forcefully evacuate them from the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
In response, the Palestinians threw rocks at the Zionist troops and burned tires.
Meanwhile, protests broke out in Gaza. The Zionist regime’s media reported that hundreds of Palestinians have been protesting near the closed Karni crossing in the Gaza Strip, with the Zionist troops reportedly using flares and stun grenades to confront the people.
Video showing the regime troops firing flares against the Palestinians was shared on Twitter.
Mass demonstrations were reported throughout the Gaza Strip, as thousands of Gazans hit the streets to express support for the Palestinians who live in al-Quds. Photos and video said to have been taken in different parts of Gaza were shared on social media.
Other resistance groups have warned the regime of tit-for-tat responses if it continues its acts of aggression against the Palestinian people.
"The enemy’s raids on Gaza will not deter the resistance from carrying out its duties whenever necessary,” the Islamic Jihad Movement said via Twitter on Saturday.
"The resistance will respond to any act of aggression in kind, and it will protect our people and will not allow the enemy to bypass the rules of engagement,” the movement said.
It also described al-Aqsa Mosque as a "red line,” which Palestinians will not allow the Zionist settlers to cross.
